Road Cycling - What to do with an old frame...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've got an old (1996ish) GT karakoram sitting in my garage thats been neglected for about five years... The frame (cro-moly) seems to be in good shape, but just about everything else needs to be replaced.. singlespeed went through my head, but I dunno what all I would have to buy to do that... Basically I can't afford much of anything for this (since I'm saving up for a brand new road bike). The chain and cables are rusted, the shifters don't work, and the brakes need serious work...
Fabricate a trainer or rollers and use it as a bike to mess with when inside.

Build a fixed gear/single speed bike. The are great for training on and will help your pdeal stroke and make excellent commuter bikes and base trainers. You could build the bike up for under $300.00 by using ebay.

its a road bike, right? i'm not real familier w/ the GT models, they went wal-mart before I got into biking.
If its a road bike, go fixie. if its a MTB, make it a singlespeed.
