I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I just bought a new set of Shimano Ultegra 6700 wheels, and after purchasing them I asked if the mechanic could switch over my existing 10 speed cassette

When I got them home and went to mount the wheels with tires, I noticed that the cassette wasn't spinning, it's stuck in the same spot. Has anyone encountered this before?

I thought I was going to save myself the money for a chainwhip/lockring remover, but instead went and bought some and took it home and took off the cassette to look at the freehub body. It spins without the cassette, but when I tighten the lockring, it tightens the cassette and it won't spin.

I have no idea why. Thanks for any help!

*I took the cassette off the Ultegra wheelset and put it on my older set, and the cassette spins fine.

Is there a spacer ring behind the cassette? Remove it to use with your new wheels. 10-speed hubs are a bit shorter that "9/10-speed compatible" hubs that are sometimes sold as "10-speed".


That done, worry about the mechanic. He mounts a cassette and doesn't notice that it's locked?? :o

Nah there isn't a spacer in the back. The cassette was originally mounted to a Xerolite XSR-3 hub

um. I think a faar more likely scenario is that you need a spacer behind the cassette and don't have one, not the other way around

FWIW: In my personal experience:

Bontrager hub + 10 sp Shimano cassette (105): spacer required
Bontrager hub (same as above) + 10 sp SRAM cassette (PG1070): no spacer required.

I believe spacer is 1mm thick.

Were that true then the cassette would be loose though the lockring is tightened down.
Best to go right back to the guy who installed it and show him his fine work.

Not necessarily. Without the spacer, the back of the cassette may be dragging on the hub shell. With the spacer, it's free to turn.

+1 on take it back to the LBS and have him do it correctly.

check for rivets hitting the spokes/hub
