Mountain Biking - i need some help identifying a bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

so i found a really good deal on a '95 trek 8700 on craigslist but i can't seem to find a photo of one anywhere. the guy is selling it for very cheap so it makes me suspicious that it may not be what he says it is. can anyone send me a photo or maybe give me some advice on how to tell if it's for real?

That a plain old 8700 or the 8700SHX? Here's a color breakdown from vintage-trek.com:

91, composite main tubes and conch (pink) with conch decals on white and bright blue
92, flat black with flat clear coat and green decals
93, ice blue and natural tubes with white decals
94, ice violet and natural tubes with violet decals
95, ice copper with natural tubes and ice copper decals
95 8700SHX polished with natural carbon tubes with gray and white outlined graphics

They had an extract of the 95 catalog, but no pics of the 8700. You might dig around that site some more....good luck.

thanks. so the guy sent me a pic. it doesn't really match those descriptions, but i'll do some more research. reason i thought it was a '95 beforehand was because he mentioned that it had front shocks but i guess that those could be added. https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=b39b5e85ec&view=att&th=12915526157c28c0&attid=0.2&disp=inline&zw

i did but i guess it didn't work. here's another photo i found similar to it. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c320/retrobikeguy/tests/trek%201991%20catalogue/page4.jpg

and here's the picture that didn't work last time and probably won't this time either. https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=b39b5e85ec&view=att&th=12915526157c28c0&attid=0.2&disp=inline&zw

as far as the internets tell me, it's a '91 but i haven't found anything solid yet.

What's the difficulty in uploading the other image? I

Why is the specific year important? The frames didn't change much if at all other than in color, did they? Especially not all that important if it doesn't have some or all of the original components. Have you looked thru the bikepedia listings at the components for a comparison to see if you can narrow it down that way?

Hopefully it's not this "road bike" 8700 :) http://daytona.craigslist.org/bik/1747481363.html

the other image doesn't matter to me anymore. i'm fairly sure of what i'm getting; it's just that i'm constantly curious about bicycles. that's the problem. and by the way... it is not that bike.

Carbon fibre that old? A lot can happen in 20 years. Better get it x-rayed.
