Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Recommend me a new threadless stem

I'm looking to get a new stem, it doesn't have to be super high end, just domething decent.
I'm looking for a stem a little shorter then what I have now (100mm) with a bit of a +- rise.

Any suggestions appreciated!

What size is your fork?

Oh yeah, I'd need it a 1 1/8th stem. Specifically, my bike is an IRO Mark V Pro, it has the standard fork that comes with the bike on it.

Check out the Velo Orange stems. They are great quality (I have one) and beautiful. They should be priced at $100 and they sell for $35. They come in 6 degree and 17 degree rises with a nice assortment of lengths.

Seconded on the VO stem..Looks just like my Nitto UI-5GX, only its about half the price. Would have saved some money and gotten one myself had I seen it in my size sooner. Both are great looking stems, especially if you want something with a nice polished look.

Can anyone comment on the Origin 8 Profit stem? Looks similar to the Velo Orange stem. Comes in the same sizes and looks to be about the same weight. A little cheaper.

quick question...now i have a 100mm stem and I wanted something a little shorter. I was thinking 90mm but then I was thinking 80mm. Is that generally to short, should I just stick with the 90mm. It just doesn't seem like a big differance from a 100 to a 90.

Try a 90mm first.

You might notice a slight handling issue, it will respond to your arm movement quicker than your longer stem.

depends on your arms. no one can tell you if your bars will fit better one or two centimeters closer to you unless they're measuring your body on a bike.

Measure twice, cut once.

If you aren't sure about the size you want/need, go to a shop and try on a few for size. Many shops have several sizes in stock and you won't pay much more than internet prices (with associated shipping).

Stems are a-dime-a-dozen. You can go high-end if you want, but the most frustrating thing is spending good money on the wrong stem then having to spend more money replacing it or simply buying the right one outright.

If you're looking for polished, Kore XC stems are another option much like the VO. I think it was discontinued--clearance anywhere from $8-$20 if available. However, if you're not sure, I agree with carleton's advice. You can likely find an LBS somewhere nearby with a few different ones in stock for a similar price, and you can swap 'em out for fit. I have a Ritchey WCS takeoff that cost $25, but I'd be hard pressed to say it's vastly better than most $30-$45 4-bolt stems I've seen at what it costs off the shelf.

It looked kinda cool on the bike I saw--neither of which I could afford. A little cleaner and well-machined than a Truvativ or cheaper version, but for regular riding it feels akin to buying a humvee as a grocery getter. :)
