Mountain Biking - Rigging a remote lockout switch?

Now that I got my Noleen pull shock back from being rebuilt, I got a chance to look at the lockout mechanism, and it isn't a switch I can just reach down and flip. It's spring loaded, so it won't stay in the locked position without something pulling it taut. I don't have the remote for it, but I was wondering if anybody knows if an old school friction shifter would do the trick. The lever spring seems a tad tighter than a derailleur spring, but I know the friction can be tightened as well. What do you think?

Oh, and before anybody comes in and says "you don't need lockout", this bike will double as my commuter, and I'd love to be able to make it fully rigid for that.

I think it would work with a thumb shifter, especially if you can dial up the friction. If you want to get pimp, you could get a lockout lever from rockshox- the cable stroke is adjustable, so it could be made to work with your shock.

Those Rock Shox kits are expensive! I think I'll see what I can do with a regular friction shifter.

Well, I went to a local shop I know to carry plenty of NOS parts, and they had a friction shifter. It has way too much throw, but it gets the job done. Now I have to decide if it's worth getting a lockout fork as well, or just being happy with it acting as a hardtail.

if you found a fork with lock out you could probably buy cheap commuter online for the same price

for a cheap fork with lock out you'd probably not be able to have a remote either so you'd have to fab something up again

I don't care about a remote. I wouldn't have rigged up the rear one if there was a way to use that lockout without it. Anyway, when I got to the shop, all they had was last year's model (no lockout), but they gave me a discount and I was happy. It's not like I'm going to be sprinting out of the saddle while commuting anyway. I hope to finish building the bike up tomorrow!

I've just bought some magura forks with a missing remote lockout lever that i'm going to put on a singlespeed. I was thinking of using a dual-control lever like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=7888 with the shifter part connected to the lockout. Is this clever or stupid? Will it work do you think?
