so i swapped out my rear pads and I kinda forced them apart to allow room for the disc to slip inbetween. Now, the rear brakes have no stopping power. the lever goes all the way to the stop. I assume I have to bleed it but I am wondering why bc I never opened the system to air. In fact, the system has never been vented to atm. WTF. PS - I am a hydraulics n00b

Did you pry the pads apart with the new pads?(Not the right thing to do.) If you have to, leave the old pads in to push the pistons back into the caliper or use a flat bladed screwdriver to push the pistons back in, pop in new pads. You'll likely need to bleed the brakes.

WHy does it matter if I use the old or new pads to pry apart the pistons?

No need to worry about damaging the pad surface on pads that are going to be replaced anyways.
