Over memorial day weekend, Mrs Yangmusa and I took the train up to Auburn with a few others. Our route was roughly: Capitol Corridor train to Auburn (camp 1), bike to: Georgetown (lunch) – Lotus (camp 2) – Coloma (gold rush museum) – Placerville (lunch) - Shingle Springs (camp 3) – Folsom - Sacramento, train back. About 120 miles over 3 days, with 8500 ft of climbing. My 9-speed Birdy keeps amazing me with how capable it is despite the limited gear range, though there was one short hill that was so steep I had to get off and push - but then so did everyone else!
The Mrs and I have a good system now, where we distribute the food, camping and cooking stuff between us. Both bikes are great for loaded touring, no problem at all carrying all our gear and keeping up with "real" touring bikes.
My only wish is I could find a height adjustable sport stem for the Birdy, but the US dealer seems to have given up the ghost. Maybe next time I'm in Europe.
