Touring - largest water bottles that fit a standard cage

i started this thread a while ago in the road forum, and we came up with the zefal magnum bottles at 32 oz. anyone in the touring forum know of any larger.

i'll be doing a fast century out to harpoon brewery in VT later this summer and i want to maximize my fluid capacity on the bike without resorting to any means other than my two bottle cages...

32oz, is about as big as you can safely fit into a standard cage. Hi i used a zefal magnum when i was touring solo in January from Adelaide to Perth. I choose it because it was the biggest bottle i could find that would fit in a standard cage.

This is the worst bottle i've ever had. it leaked the whole time. Firstly you have to screw the top on so tight just to get it to seal that when you need to unscrew it, it's almost impossible. The nipple also leaks air when you're sucking on it so it's like sucking on a straw that has a hole in it. I lost about 1/4 of the water from it whenever drank from it so i gave up and just used it to refill my 1.5L bottle i had in a Topeak ModulaCageXL.

You naturally squeeze a bottle when your drinking from it. When doing this to the Zefal Magnum over time it stuffs up the roundness of the top where the thread is so you end up cross-threading it when putting the lid on. This lets a hell of a lot of water out.

I hope that I am the only one that has had this experience with this bottle.
Has anyone else got any feedback on it?

oh, i think the zefal magnums are great and use them extensively. the lid can be a bit fiddly but its just because they add the quality of a rubber gasket in the lids so screw down with care.

i use one liter soda bottles. those are roughly 33 fl. oz each. and one liters do fit in standard water bottle holders.

This is what I use. Swap the screw on nozzle from a smaller bottled watter if you don't like having to unscrew the cap for a drink.

I use the zefal magnum and have used various ones for years. It's a great bottle ... holds lots, has a large mouth so you can get energy powder and ice in there, is easy to drink from ... and I've no idea what people are talking about when they say it leaks. They must be doing something wrong.

hmm i must have a "one off" crap one....and i'm sure i'm not doing anything wrong with it.

The Topeak cage that Garthr suggests is good, but the rubber strap on it that holds the top in close to the cage breaks very easily. After breaking the original and the replacement, I now just use some string to keep it secure. However, it is only needed when off roading and nothing needed on pavement. Also, that cage can actually hold a bottle larger than the advertized size of 1.5 liters as long as it is alittle taller but not wider.

I'm with the 'leaky magnum" crowd. I have two that I've used for about three years, and one leaks around the bite valve. I think it started to leak the first year I had it . I put up with it becuase of it large capacity, but I can empathize with some of you.

I use 1.5 liter water bottles that I buy from the gas station. I find that if I turn them upside down so that the screwtop pokes down below the bottom of the cage then the length is just right. The width is also just right. I've also jammed in powerade bottles -- they're a little big, but if I jam it in then the plastic creases and it fits nicely. This is on a mountain bike on bumpy roads -- I don't usually have a problem with things falling out.
