Touring - Anybody want to do C&O in October?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My wife and I are going, we are taking the Amtrak from Central FL to DC, then taking a leisurely 4-6 days to do the tow path, with camping but lots of eating out and whatnot...

Would be nice to have some like minded people to share the good time with :thumb:

I might. It depends if I'm working or not. If I'm still employed, then no.

To where? Cumberland? If so forget it. There is no luggage service in Cumberland.

yeah, I see that now. I would like to start in Cumberland so I can take advantage of the locks going downhill the whole way, might have to train to DC and take a service up to Cumberland or rent a mini van one way...

There are shuttle services. If you have a few people it might not be that much more expensive than renting and a lot less hassle.

Another thing you may consider is taking the train to Pittsburgh and doing the GAP - C&O. I believe they have full luggage service in Pittsburgh too. That way you could go straight to Pitt and ride back to DC. It'll add 150 miles to the ride but the GAP riding is much smoother, from what I've heard. I attempted this ride (in reverse) last year but got stopped by horrific weather in early October. So, I may be interested to try it again...

The problem with a train to Pittsburgh is that it arrives at midnight.

But if you decide on this route and I am in town and I don't have to go to work the next day and there are only 2-3 people :) . You are welcome to stay here. You can then take the Montour Trail to the GAP. I would be happy to act as tour guide down the trail or through the city (shorter).

I have looked at this ride every year and have decided to do another for different reasons. Hmmmmmm?

Assuming I continue to work at the same place......
Since I am local, I have been trying to do a little of the C&O at a time. I have not made it all the way to Cumberland. Currently, I find I have been spending time in the pool and not on the bike.

If times work out, I would love to have someone to ride with, but at this point I can not make any promises. I will also say, I am slow and have been stopping to take pictures, read, talk to people....so I may not make the best companion if you plan on zoom, zooming the trail.

If you need to pick someone's brain, let me know I will pull out books, pictures, GPS data.....

Additionally, there are other places to ride in DC, if you want something less woodsy.

If you see a fat guy on this bike, give a yell.
