having no particular urge to die, I'd use a cotter pin. It's not like they're hard to find. I'd say that even if I didn't own a thousand or so cotter pins, and had to make a trip to the hardware store to get one.

Of course, if it happened on the road... But I'd still replace t with the correct item as soon as reasonably possible.

What they're called varies from place to place. In the us, they're mostly "cotter pins" or "cotter keys". In the UK, it's a "split pin". I don't know what candian usage is. In french, I believe it's une goupille fendu.
In non-bike applications, I have replaced them with paper clips, bent nails, safety pins, twist ties, dental floss, and human hair, plus boring hardware like hitch pin clips, lynchpins, and the like. It depends what sort of loads they're exposed to, and how much force. On the side of a road or trail, I might consider something like that, but not otherwise.

Yeah, just replace it with another split-pin. You can find them at most hardware shops, and probably some auto stores too
