Hybrid Bicycles - looking for a bike with 28-32c tires & drop handelbars, in the $500-$700 range

a 'cross bike such as a surly crosscheck, specialized tricross or kona jake would be ideal, but the cheapest of the three (the jake) starts at $899 -- a little out of my price range. anyone know of a good all-purpose bike with 28-32c tires and drop handlebars that can be had (new) for $500-700?

Would you even consider buying a used bicycle to get one of the models you want? There are many decent bikes being offered on CraigsList (just one resource) for great prices. Often people buy bikes on an impulse, ride them a few times... and then they are relegated to a corner of the garage or basement to collect dust.

I strongly suspect the tire size listed is incorrect, as my Dr. Dew came with 32mm tires, not 37s. You might be able to find last year's model even cheaper.

Have you considered building your own bicycle?
For $500-700 it should be possible if you search for online shops to buy the parts cheaply.
What you could do to make it simpler is to go to your LBS and buy the bike you like, but without groupset and without wheels ... this way you already have: frame, fork, saddle, seatpost, stem & handlebar.
Then you go online and find the parts seperately and build your own custom bike the way you like it and choose the tyres you like.
Just a suggestion :)

When I tried to do this, it ended up being significantly more expensive than buying prebuilt, even with a cheap Nashbar frame. It was especially expensive when I factored in buying the workstand and tools ($300+ right there).

The three bikes you've mentioned are not hybrids they are cyclocross bikes. Bikes Direct dot Com have three cyclocross bikes that fall into your price range.
