Hi guys,
I'm thinking of getting a '98 Trek 420 tourer bike (see pic), and from what I know from my riding buddy, he tells me that the bike:
-1. is using a threaded headset/fork
-2. the shifter is the silver thingy on the frame
My questions are:
1. Will this affect me if I want to upgrade the headset or handlebars in the future?
2. Will I be able to upgrade the handlebars and have a new set of shifters installed onto the handlebars instead?
Thanks for all useful input!
-Andre :)

Sorry, had to resize and upload the pic again. Forgot about the file size limitation.

You won't have any problems with either - There are stops that mount on the shifter bosses for the shift cables integrated in the newer brake/shift levers, and a new threadless headset and fork / stem will round it out.

If the bike headset is threaded, will I be able to use thread-less?
If the bike headset is threaded, will I be able to use thread-less?Yeah, if you buy a threadless fork,HS and stem.

How much do you think I should pay for the 6 year old bike? :)

Damm little if you are planning on upgrading a bunch of stuff. Cheaper probably to buy what you want, except the Trek touring bike has not been sold with STI shifters. Barends are nearly as effective, about bulletproof and alot cheaper.

Yes, but why? There's nothing "wrong" with a threaded headset and stem. If you don't like the downtube shifters, go with barcons instead. In the $50-$60 range, they are much cheaper than upgrading to brifters, nearly as convient and much more reliable.
