Hey, since 3-speed hubs have been around long before index housing do you really need to use index housing for the shift cable? I really hate index housing and was thinking of replacing it with brake housing.

Thanks,

As long as you have the right linkage and anchor shape on the cable, it shouldn't matter what kind of housing you're using. The proper housing, however, may give you better shifting.

All of the current aftermarket 3 speed Sturmey Archer "Universal" cables I have seen use old style wound wire housing, some not even lined from appearances. IMO good lined brake housing should work fine.

Note: just installed lined brake housing (the good stuff). It doesn't seem any different than the old SIS stuff I had on there.

I'll note on here if I have issues with sloppy shifting.
