No Lemond Wayzata for 05. Flat bars on Poprad?

I was all set to purchase a Lemond Wayzata when my LBS informed me that the model was dropped for 2005 and no 2004 available. Any downside to getting the Poprad and switching out the handlebars/stems/levers to flat bar and mtb shifters/brakes? also changing the tires. I was under the impression that the frames were the same. anything I am missing? also, what parts would be equivalent? LBS is asking $50 for the switch. seems reasonable to me.

also, i see some people have the '05 poprad. does anyone have any pics or links to pics? doesnt seem to be up on the lemond site.


btw I am a mtbiker looking for a bike to commute with, for fitness and possibly charity rides and centuries. Had a roadbike for a year (cannondale) and could not get used to the drop bars and bent position. any other options for me? was considering the sirrus and kona dew deluxe but I want steel!

50 sounds good, unless they put low-end parts on. Maybe the parts spec for Wazata would be equivalent. I can't help you much, but I'll say that bike will be nice.

Watch out, this forum is full of people who will tell you all about how lame flat bars are. Unless you're racing, they are fine. Even century no problem (w barends so you can change your hand position).

I like City Bikes in Adams-Morgan and Bicycle Pro Shop in Georgetown. Performance outlets in Va. and Md. for good deals. If you buy something there you'll get lots of mail advertising sale items.

Get used to the position. You can still ride the top of the drop bars.

Raise the seat, until you stretch. Ebay has a bunch of steel frames, way cheap.

Why set up a road bike like a mountain bike ?

I have been riding a 2003 Wayzata for two years and have absolutely no trouble riding 65-70 miles. Flat bars are NOT lame and don't give up. I'd even consider getting Serotta or someone like that to make you a custom flat bar. When my Wayzata gets worn out, that's what I'm going to do. I personally do not feel confident of controlling the bike in the leaning-over position.

It's too bad LeMond discontinued the Wayzata but I'm not shocked. I only ever saw two others of them in all the organized and club rides I've been on from Connecticut to North Carolina.

Try College Park Bikes if you haven't yet. If LeMond has any in back inventory they'll get it for you.

Don't sweat the flat bars, ride 'em if you like 'em. Last week in our series finals, a fixie rider (yes fixie) w/ flat bars won the C's. He was a messenger who beat out all of the series points leaders. It's the rider.
