Touring - Dropbars and pneumatic disc-brakes, how did Crescent think???

Hi!

I'm a wannabee tourer, I got a decent bike, have done some hundreads killometers last two years but less then I want to. Anyway, my tourerbike is a Crescent 707, a rather good bike. Alu and a bit flexy and heavy as hell but it works. The only thing that really bathers me is that some genious at Crescent inc put flatbars on the bike! I've equiped it with barends and time trial-bars but that doesn't work very well for touring. Now I wonder if I could install a dropbar but keep the pneumatic brakes? I suppose I could change it for wire-disc brakes but that's a bit to expensive I suppose.

Maybe should have post this thread in bicykle mechanics but I think you were more experienced.

There are no hydraulic levers for drop bars.

155297Yeah, there are...or were. These are Magura HS 66 levers I had on my tourer until recently. I dunno if they're still making them though...

I prefer Dropbar as i am road biker. My touring expereince in asia is: it is prefer to use disk brake if u carry heavy stuffs and good when raining. without diskbrake, i may be killed in Laos. And if u always ride at a hilly area. Diskbrake n dop bar will help u ! Goodd Luck!

You could put these (http://www.amazon.com/Origin-Bicycle-Drop-Ends-Black/dp/B0013G6PB8) on your flat bar, then you have drops; though you'd still have to live with the brake levers as they are.

Trekking bars are one of those good-as-far-as-the-name-goes products. Simple fix would be Avid BB7 mechanical disc on the front, and run your current lever on the tops of the drop bar to the rear. That way when you are diddling along on the tops you can run off the rear brakes, and when you are maxed out on a hill on the drops you have the front brake. You could add a redundant lever to some cantis on the rear from the other drop position. This gives you for not too different weight what people are acheiving with cross brakes at the top yet you have some real parts and mechanical redundancy.

Or just go all BB7. Where discs are used on touring bikes mechanicals tend to get the nod for easier repair etc...

for a moment, i was wondering which company was going to either kill riders using highly compressible pneumatic brakes....but then again, heavy vehicles use pneumatic-assisted hydraulic braking... though it isn't a 100% implementation via pneumatic....

Now, when CX-discbrakes are allowed there are brakelevers on the way. But now I don't want drops anymore! :P

I do, drops would be better even with the same levers as trekking bars on the tops. One could add those hoodies they use on tanden bars.

Who will be bringing out the levers?

Plowed through some CX threads and didn't see anything new quite yet, did I miss it. There seemed to be an expectation that someone would bring out a hydro brifter, despite tech difficulties. That would be an interesting development for touring bikes if it were made to any practical degree of durability.

Hydraulic rim brakes + Rohloff grip shifter on my trekking bar equipped Koga Miyata '04 WTR.
Racks mudguards lights , Etc...

Maybe 'the-crunge' would part with those Hs 66 levers? Ive been looking for some..

I don't know about the Magura HS-66 levers but I know that the HS-33 brake levers aren't compatible with Magura hydraulic disc brakes.

Production of the HS-66 was discontinued in 2003 because of poor demand.

Hydraulic discs can be put on a bike with dropbars but they are a expensive conversion.
