Guys,

I want to fit the XT rear mech I removed from my 9-spd and fit it to my wife's 8-spd bike. As a sanity check before fitting it can I assume there are no 8-spd v 9-spd issues with rear mechs?

No. Except for the 1st year 8-speed Dura-Aces, all Shimano rear derailleurs are compatible with eachother and are 7-, 8- and 9-speed compatible. It's the shifters that make the difference.

IOW, she needs to keep her 8 speed shifters, but you can give her your derailleur.

Thanks Michel. I'm changing her shifters to SRAM 8-spd Rockets, and a new SRAM chain will complete the setup.

Oh, and use an 8sp chain. I've found them to be stronger than 9sp, albeit a little heavier.

You should be good to go. SRAM Rockets will work with a Shimano derailleur, SRAM ESP shifters won't.

No. Except for the 1st year 8-speed Dura-Aces, all Shimano rear derailleurs are compatible Not really! ALL pre 9 speed DA RDs(that's 6,7,and 8 speed) had a unique throw ratio and had to be used with pre 9 speed DA shifters.

Sorry. I was referring to the relatively recent ones (1997 + or 1998 +). I haven't tried my luck with a 1980 Deore derailleur, but I doubt very much it would be compatible... P.S. for the young ones, that's about 2 years before Positron and 8 years before indexing.

a2p, I still have it. My pride and joy is my Cannondale Gemini 1000 which I uprated to full SRAM XO and I'm poised to replace the LX front mech with an XTR. My wife gets my old LX and she gets new Rocket shifters next week maybe. The sig refers to a time when I rode home one day and I chanced upon a couple of kids who were bopping along the pavement and doing drop-offs from a low wall. They spotted my bike and me in full baggies and sort of looked on me as a long lost cousin. They invited me to hang out with them, which was a real complement from 16yr olds to me, a then 48yr old! Naturally, I had to decline and said "no" but as I rode away, one shouted something to me like "Cool, bro! Don't forget, pure urban, hard cement!"

It sort of stuck in my mind and I copied it to my sig!
