Classic & Vintage - My ItalVega garage sale find.

I found this bike at a garage sale for $25. I think its a Gran Rally. Its got Campi parts. I would like to know what year it was made. Its got a 6 digit serial number. I put the seat,rims, straight bars and brake levers on it. Its great because its a large bike and fits me well. :thumb:

You did very well for $25! What did you do with the wheels and other parts that came with it? I hope you kept them, judging by the frame, the bike would have been built up with nice parts.

I suppose that the original wheels may have been very nice sew ups, and someone swapped them out for black-anodized clinchers. I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over that - it's still a gift horse! Just get some Panaracer gumwalls on it and it will look great!

Judging from the lack of brazed fittings, late 60s to mid 70s. You can probably get a closer estimate from the NR rear derailleur. It should have a patent year and a manufacturing date code.

I was going to say that for $25 it was a good deal even with those bars, but then I finished reading the post. Did it have Cinelli Giro bars with a 1A stem?

edit: I can't really tell what the pedals are -- maybe NR pedals, too. Yes, that's a screaming deal for $25.

Lawee was not marketing Italvega bikes in the US in the 60s; he was selling Motobecanes ;) The brand started in 1970 and then became Univega in the late 70s... This is probably a Torresini frame. Great find!

Thanks for the responses. The parts that I put on were the missing parts when I bought it. I could not find a date on the derailleur and the pedals are Berthet Lyotard and the crankset is Ofmega "not sure if that was original on the bike" Brakes are universal super 68

A very sweet deal for $25. The derailleur will say patent-XX on the upper knuckle where it bolts to the frame. I'd guess all the parts you mentioned were original to the bike. I have what is obviously a later model with braze on shift bosses, cable guides and bottle mounts, I've been told it is a '73 or '74 with a patent 72 Campy NR RD.

I believe you have a mid 1970's (post '74) Italvega Super Record. The Gran Rally came with the campy rally derailler. The frame is one of the nice ones, with the sloping fork crown. The other two models with this type of frame came with campy brakes (super speciale, super light), and I think the lower models had a different fork crown, and lower end tubing, etc. Nice find. My interest in vintage lightweights began many years (and bicycles) ago with a garage sale find Italvega Super Speciale...

If this bike had all it's original parts and was a 6or 7 out of a 10, what would it be worth?
Are the Ofmega cranks original?

Need to know the model. I think I can see remnants of the model name on the tob tube between the headtube lug and the first brake cable guide. Can you decipher anything there?

If a Gran Rally, very likely all original. Look at this post. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=525292) There is another Gran Rally, same color as yours with what looks like same components (def. same crankset)
