So Im having some drivetrain issues. I have a mostly stock fit trl 3 which I put a 28 tooth season sprocket on.
After about 4 weeks of riding with hat sprocket I had to replace my rear tyre and when we tried to put the chain back on it wouldn't fit onto the sprocket, it just sat there on top of the teeth.
After inspecting it we found that around the bottoms of the sprocket teeth little burrs had formed from bits of metal that had worn down from the sprocket teeth. My friend took a file to them and the chain fit back on. Then he noticed that my chain, which was only about 6-7 weeks old was also totally ****ed. So he gave me a new chain which then also didn't quite fit so we did some extra filing and it fits. It is in fact a 1/8th sprocket and a 1/8th chain, we're not that stupid. What's going on?
We have a few theories.
1. Season sprockets are junk.
2. 9 teeth in the back just isn't enough if you wanna run a big gear up front, maybe I should run 30/10 or something like that. We figure that maybe the 28/9 gearing is chewing up the chain too much which is in turn chewing up my sprocket. (My previous ratio of 25/9 was just too weak, 28/9 feels great and is just fast enough to ride in traffic)
Which theory do you guys like best? Or do you reckon it's a little bit of both?
I'm not sure what to do either. I really, really, want the gearing i currently have or something very similar. I wouldn't mind switching to 30/10 but that would mean getting a new hub. :notamused:
I figure that for now I'm just gonna continue riding it as it isn't affecting the performance of the bike too much. There is a bit of a click with every revolution of the pedals, but its pretty minor and it isn't slowing me down any.
If theres anyone here who's had a similar experience please gimme some insight. If it's just the sprocket then I could just replace that, if you all reckon its cause 9 teeth aren't enough to handle the torque of 28 up front and that's whats causing it then im gonna have to wait till I can afford to upgrade my hub.
Also, if this sounds weird to you guys keep in mind that I ride a bit differently from most bmxers. I just got back into bmx and am a pretty active cyclist. I've been working as a courier for a bit and as a bike taxi driver as well. I ride a lot and cover fairly large distances regularly. If a skatepark is within 15 km I'll probably ride there before I'd take a train. The other day I did around 40 km. I rarely ride less than 20km a day. I also like to ride really fast in traffic. Basically I'm doing a lot of sprints from standstill. This is probably more wear on the drive train than anyone else I ride with. I'm not much of a bmxer as far as skill/tricks go, but I can outride most people when it comes to distance and speed.
So yeah, any help would be appreciated. If it's just the season sprocket that's junk then maybe I can get it warrantied.
