just got a free old ass bike from about 30 to 40 years ago. i'm looking to convert it to a single speed. (i've got a nice single speed already, and a nice geared bike as well), but this bike is going to be the "no one's going to steal this thing" bike. i've got rims (the stock rims from my current single speed). pretty much all i need is a crank and chain wheel. is there a site i can buy used bike cranks that will work with an older frame, or is anyone have a crank/chain wheel floating around they want to sell for cheap?

Ebay? Craigslist? Used bike stuff has pretty much zip markup potential so your best best is the older bike shops or consignment sales places in your area. Other than that there's Ebay and Craigslist.

And a WTB in the Parts For Sale section here should turn something up as well. But likely the cost of shipping the things will be more than they are worth if you're after older stuff.

The trick is to get NICE older stuff that looks cheap. No point in riding something with cruddy parts on it that takes away from the fun of the ride.
