I have notice a few recent treads posted by folks with the Look Hinault. It got me thinking. Although the Look's we see are only replicas of the real team bikes, they are probably my favorite bikes of all time. I just can't think of a race bike that i would put above the Look except maybe a real ragged out tour team bike owned by Merckx, Hinault ect. I do have my first & only racing team bike that means more to me for personal reasons. Of corse there are tons of bikes that are better crafted & I am not implying that the Look compares to something like a Sachs in any way. Anyway, What you you folks regard as "The Bike" above all others?

For me it depends what the purpose is...
For collecting and looking at lovingly? A Curly Hetchins.
For riding...a custom built for your exact specifications. Perhaps a Bilenky, Kirke or Kellog. Probably titanium.
I'm awfully happy with the stable I do have. I have some excpeptional riders and some really unique beauties. The Merlin isn't very far from being my ideal rider.

Racing bike: Merckx. (Unless I could convince Albert Eisentraut to build me a custom.)
Rando bike: Alex Singer or a "real" Rene Herse (in MY size? hah!)

I like the way KAS answered this query.
For me, a bike such as my De Rosa 35th Anniversary may just be "the" bike above all others. Haven't ever ridden the bike a foot yet, so I am basing this entirely on her good looks and rep.
Otherwise, my De Rosa SLX is my best fit and feel bike. Plus she goes like a bat out of h......
End game for me though will be a custom bike or two. I really like the Kirk Terraplane. Amazing bike. I'll have it built just the way I want it.
That bike, or a Curt Goodrich Sportif could easily carry me off into the next twenty years of riding bliss.

The Kirke Terraplane is just amazingly cool...I'm in love with the rear design. I think it was either Kurt or Lotek who first mentioned one of those and I've been in lust ever since. I'd have a VERY hard time chosing between Bilenky and Kirke.
I'd also really like to build a modern version of the traditional town and country English 3 speed...8 spd rear internal, modern dynohub...light, but strong, frame material (similar to what my Koga-Miyata is made of), cantis and aluminum rims.

Thanks for sharing the look hinault pic. there are a few of those around. i saw a guy at a swap meet peddling one of those around with a baby car mounted on the back. it was the only good bike at the meet and he wasnt selling it. the hinault bike i want is the silver one with the red hinault decals. that one was earlier than the look one you show. lemond rode that look hinault but he covered up the hinault decals with huffy ones

I picked up a Team Miyata a few weeks ago and just acquired a Dave Moulton Fuso. Those 2 will replace my Merckx Century and Guerciotti which are both sold/being sold.

The Team Miyata is definitely on my list/radar as well.

Congratulations.
Both excellent choices.
I love my Merckx Century, but if the correct offer came by..........
There was a Team Miyata that sat for a while last winter on the local CL. Should a grabbed it for you bike fiends. :)
My "dream list" is adjusted down quite a bit due to a very limited bike budget. So the ones I have will have to do for a while. Even if it is a smokin hot deal, I have a keeper dollar limit and a keeper # limit. So if I add one, I have to drop something from the current fleet. Given my meager budget, I would be hard pressed to move up much.
