Foo - the Apples and PCs both DON'T suck thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was just realizing a couple of things about computers. firstly, there used to be such a huge distinction between Macs and PCs - you had to choose, and then accept the limitations of that platform. PCs had much crucial software that Macs didn't have. on the other hand, they were basically DOS masquerading as Mac OS, and were inherently buggy and insecure as a result. Mac hardware was also much different, discouraging cross-platform development. now the OS of both platforms perform in a much more comparable way, there are plenty of great applications no matter what you run, and the hardware is almost interchangeable. I call this progress.

secondly, I was thinking about how they have changed life (specifically via the internet) in a positive and breathtaking way. I basically have a continually updated encyclopedia at my fingertips - all it takes is knowing how to search for things and discriminate between good and bad information. I also love how it has diminished the barriers between countries - I communicate every day with people from all over the world, I can listen to music made all over the world, and that music is increasingly influenced by multinational sources (someone referred to it as "post-national" music, which I like). I can read the news, check the weather, read my mail, and read up on my interests, and listen to new tunes from the 1000 or so artists I follow on myspace in one sitting. in the 1980s this was a much more complicated process, or not possible at all. when I was growing up, finding new music was difficult to impossible, depending on who and where it was made. finding information was incomparably difficult. I love books (and they are also much easier to find), but having to trudge down to the library to look up something? anyone remember that?

ok, let's see how many arguments people can scare up! I swear, there are people you could put on a tropical island with a billion dollars, and they would still find things to b***h and disagree about. :D

life is GOOD. deal with it. ;)

What do PCs OR macs have to do with this?

Look at the impact of open-source software (Apache httpd, Media Wiki, Lucene, hundreds more) for the source of this...IMHO.

I don't know about all that, but I suck at cycling, that's for sure.

Before computers, most people had this thing known as "a life." No more. Computers suck.

This thread reminds me of a Mae West quote: "When choosing between two evils, I always choose the one I've never chosen before"

I don't do that with computers but I feel like it from time to time whenever a really annoying problem comes up with my computer. Fortunately though, I have friends that take the suckiness out of the situation by fixing the problem, swapping parts etc. so all I have to pay is a hand-knit item instead of big $$$$.

One thing I kind of don't like about computers in general is how wired they ar making a lot of people. With the number of gadgets you see out there, it's almost like people will self-destruct if they spend more than 5 minutes away from the internet.

Apple/Mac is out of my price range. A generic Microsoft-user PC is not.

And I DO have a life; it's just different from what it was 20 years ago. Overall, due mostly to the bike (which I bought piecemeal online and built myself), it's better now.

(Yes, I have a child that I didn't have 20 years ago, and she's a joy -- so is my nephew, whom I love like he's mine; but the 'electronic age' had nothing to do with either's existence. THEY would bring me joy in a cave with a campfire!)

Depending upon what this zombie is sucking, I don't mind at all....
