Classic & Vintage - Stupid 8 speed questions (Colnago)

Greetings, Scored me a Colnago Super on Flea bay and I'm trying to figure out how to build it upon arrival. Rear spacing is 130 mm and it comes with Campy 8 speed / Mavic wheels. My experience with brifter technology is limited to when I built my Cannondale 2.8 in the early '90's with the first iteration of Dura Ace STI. I have sitting around a pat 79 Super record rear derailluer, friction shifters and front derailluer with Super Record crankset. I guess my questions are:
1) Can/should I use the Campy s.r. rear derailluer on a 8 spd cassette? Does it have the necessary range?

2) What is the max number of teeth a s.r. rear can handle comfortably, 28?

3) Should I just bite the bullet and chase down proper Campy or Shimano Brifters and derailluers and build this thing in a more modern way?

4) Are the pictured hubs Campy Record?

What is your budget? To me, that's where it all starts. I have always used Shimano, but that is only because I am on the thrifty side, and it is what I got a deal on. Even my Colnago is all Shimano. But it really would be more aesthetically pleasing to be all Campy. I have three complete Shimano brifter groups in hand, and three more partial groups, so it will be a while before I use anything else....

Personally, if you are building the bike to ride, I would use brifters on that bike. I have pretty much converted to brifters, one bike to go (and I have the stuff in hand, so its on the to do list).

I believe your SR deraileur will handle a 28t depending on the overall gearing. asking it to do a 12-28 with a 39-53t crank might be a bit much. however your SR rd will not work with your brifters. the SR is not a slant parrallelgram style derailer style, and not designed to be used with indexing systems.

yes those hubs look like early casstte record hubs judging by the oil clip.

Have a plethora of older friction stuff in campy on hand and it just sorta seems to fit the persona of the bike. Although, I'm not opposed to briftering it I just don't have any "newer" technology on hand. Would it be possible to use older Nuovo record style friction levers with the sr derailluer on the 8 speed cassette or do you need the bigger cable barrel of the later friction shifters to get the cable range?

You can run the old friction stuff on the newer 8s cassette but if the Colnago is already half way there why not just finish it off? Lets face it, we all know your not adverse to new technology.......svt4cam.

nice looking Colnago. I do love the later 'peacock' bikes, but it is is amazing how something so simple as this frame can be so elegant.

I've used a 1970s vintage Campy Nuovo Record with a 14-28 six-speed freewheel in very hilly (northwest Arkansas) terrain and shifting was "okay". However, a determining factor is the amount of chain you'll have to wrap - I think 53-39 might be too much for an old-style Super Record with a 14-28 if you get in the "wrong gear". I don't know if it could handle the eight-speed freewheel, either.
