Well i'm new to cycling. I had a Motobecane that just got ripped off. Now I'm in a rush to find a bike before RAGBRAI. I've been shopping around and it is down to two bikes. Both 80's i'm assuming. I want to know which of the two would be the better deal for the bike.

If they're the same price, I'd go for the Sekai.

Having worked in shops that sold both, my vote goes for the Sekai also. The Raleighs of that vintage were among the worst bikes ever to bear the name, while Sekais came out of some of the best factories in Japan, and even their low end bikes were solid and well built.

...oh, and the 2700 was third from the top in the Sekai line, which ran from the 400 (bottom) to the 5000 (top).

sekai is 150 raleigh is 250

also I should mention is the 2700 gt deluxe.. if it makes a difference

+3 Even if they were the same price, the Sekai is the better bike. At $100 less, it is a no brainer. Sekai is a $150 bike, selling for $150. The Raleigh it a $150 bike, selling for $250.

Even though the Sekai has a high ten steel frame, it is the better bike.

Well then definitely the Sekai if it's cheaper AND better! The components look much better on the Sekai, even though it's not a high-end frame. I had a 2400 for awhile and it rode really nice. I'm unfamiliar with the tubing that this Raleigh frame uses, but I don't think it's anything especially nice.

I have a Sekai 2700 and it has a nice feel to it..............if only it fit me. And for the record.........I would'nt let mine go for $150. Better than the Raleigh for sure.

The shifters on the Sekai are valuable, in case you want to sell them. If you don't, they'll last a lifetime. I have those shifters and have been using them for over 30 years.

However.......................I keep looking back at that Sekai and the fork appears to be tweeked a bit.
