I found a great deal on a GT i-drive, i know they are bankrupt and that is why it is cheep. I am looking for an entry level bike to ride some fire roads with the Girlfriend. She has a 3 year old Rock hopper. I am 6'4" and 200 lbs. I have a Dale r600 road bike so I know a little about bikes. I have not ridden an I-drive hunted around for one in a LBS but no luck, any thoughts on a large frame for my size? Ride will be in the 10 to 25 mile range. No big drops or the like.

I read that post, but no help on the sizing issue, will a large be close?

doh- sorry.

I'm 6' , 225 and had no problems with my friends 5.0 (Large). due to the bottom bracket setup the bike seemed way taller than normal, so that may work in your favor. I know this isnt going to be helpful since you said you cant find one at a local shop, but the best way to find out is to ride one.

I am 6' 200-210 lbs and I ride a large i-drive. You may want to check into an XL. I am not sure if you will need an XL or not. My large I ride with the seat up about 5 1/2-6" which is about even with the bars. I have about a 33"inseam. I hope this helps.

Good luck on the i-drive...long live GT's:beer:

Thanks guys, I have a 36" inseam so I think I should be just about right, as this my entry bike to see if I like riding off road I am thinking it should be good. I am assuming I can always do the larger stem, seat post thing as long as it is 90% correct???? Compromise I know but for short jaunts on fire roads I would think it ok.

Is it true that the frame on the 5.0 is the same as on the 1.0??

My plan is to upgrade components as I kill them. Good idea or save my $$ for buy something better?

On the XL sorry to say they only have large left and small, I know small is out. But for less the $500 I figure a little on the small side is livable.

If the frame is the same, I'd get the cheaper model and replace bits as and when they wear out as it gives you the flexibility of choosing the specific parts you want.

I would have thought you'd be okay with a large (what do they term that in inches). I'm 6ft and a bit with an average inseam and ride a 19" Medium Giant hardtail, with the post a fair way out. The mistake people seem to make with MTB's is to buy one that's too large rather than too small. Stem's are very much a personal choice but can 'stretch' you out if you want, and seatposts are made with a bit of layback.

The best advice though is to try it if you can.

The frame works out to be:

Head angle: 70.5º
Seat angle: 73.5º
Top tube length: 23.4"
Standover A: 31"
Chainstay length: 17"
BB height: 13"

As I said I have a 36" inseam so the 5 inches short sounds about right to me.

Well put together on Friday muddy on Saturday.

All I need to say is WOW. No bob at all in the back, this coming from a guy who rides a Cannondale road bike on the weekdays.

To be more detailed, put some Muddy, miles on it and my brothers San Andréas and we both agreed, better suspension design on the GT. Since I got the I-Drive 5.0 we did notice the added weight compared to the XTR grouped MT Cycle got to love stapes steal chain rings and the like.
