Hey all,
I'm thinking of getting this bike: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Charge_Plug_2010/5360039090/#buyitem
The price and shipping cost don't seem too bad to me, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what I'll be paying for duty costs. Will there be more $ tacked on at the border?
Thanks!
Megan

I dont think it is a particularly good deal compared with what is available on this side of the Atlantic. $370 gets you this http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/sst_al_carb_x.htm Call the customs office to get info on duties on bikes from US or UK. UPS adds significant brokerage fees regardless of duties applied, but USPS doesnt. So also contact the shipping company.

AndrewP is right; there are affordable bikes available like the one you want much closer to home. Most of the big manufacturers offer steel, single-speed/fixed-gear bikes like the one that you're considering. Check out the Jamis Beatnik (http://www.jamisbikes.com/canada/thebikes/road/fixies/10_beatnik.html), for instance. Jamis is a reputable company that makes well-reviewed bikes. You should be able to find a Jamis dealer in most sizeable Canadian cities. The money you would spend for shipping/duty charges could go toward a nicer, locally-purchased bike. If you want to buy Canadian check out the Rocky Mountain Boroughs (http://www.bikes.com/main+en+01_102+BOROUGHS.html?BIKE=853&Y=2010&CATID=3&SCATID=51), Brodie Remus (http://www.brodiebikes.com/2010/bikes/remus.php), or the Norco Spade (http://www.norco.com/bikes/urban/belt-drive/spade/).

Thanks for all the info, guys. But, I really have my heart set on the Charge bike. I have learned that duty on the bike is 13.5%, but I wasn't aware of the brokerage fees. I will look into this. Thanks again!
