Pretty clever, but 80 bucks is a bit much.

Neat idea, not worth 80 bucks. Consider how much a Surly cog or any other mass produced cog costs.
CNC machine + modified G-code + lightly modified tooling =/= 80 bucks.

also, no guarantee that is going to fit on an oversize lockring, like a big old steel Surly for instance.

was there ever something wrong with the usual tool?

I rather stick with my hozan for the less than half the price of that novelty.

Handier to carry. I'd buy one for like $18, but not $80.

Noted. I'll likely be getting one of those in the future.

At my LBS, I told the mechanic I was going to try this method instead of buying a proper tool. He freaked and said that if I rota fixed my cog I would have stripped the paint off of my BB. Can someone explain why??

Wait...what's wrong with using a flathead screwdriver and a hammer?

But wait...it comes with a piece of flannel and a typewritten note (on custom letterhead, no less) inside a translucent envelope! Screw you naysayers, I'm buying two.

Wait until you read the superbly-detailed description of how it's packaged (making it obviously worth the selling price). You won't be able to find your wallets quick enough.

What if I want a different rotafix ratio? Do they sell different tooth counts?

This ratio gives you more skid patches.

Would it not make more sense to just make a lockring with teeth to remove it in that manner? You would not have to carry around a tool, and the added rotational mass would be right at the hub, so would not make too much difference.

does it make a difference that I can skid ambidextrously?

I change gears a lot and there is no way this is better than standard tools or a Keirin tool (http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?ID=1409). Actually this tool does less than the Pedro's Trixie tool (http://www.pedros.com/trixie.html) at 4 times the price.
"A" for effort, though.

Nope, cuz it's an odd number of teeth. Hah, didn't think I knew that, huh?

So, I'm just riding along and decide to stop and remove my lockring for no apparent reason? That thing looks like some kind of urban ninja weapon.

I'm sure you can kill someone with a chainring. My leg is all cut up from the one on my road bike.

Maybe do this with stamped steel? Could this be done with casting? ... Too good an idea to become extinct before even coming to light. I know bunch of guys are working on alloys easy to machine. Casting guys are doing some good researches too. I just visited a tech expo, you see? I wish you were there with all that machined metals and cast vacuum chambers (now that was ... excessive).

I like my hubs stripped, good hubs are for chumps and wimps.
