anyone else here carry pepper spray? not just for night rides, but just in general, where ever you go, where ever you ride be it 12 in the afternoon or 12 at night. crime in my area has been going up, and i decided to get one. a month ago a friend was jumped for his cell phone, needed 8 stitches in his head. and just today another friend almost got mugged and mugger wanted his bike. so today i just decided to grab some pepper spray...just in case. anyone else carry one?

IMO, carrying a weapon like pepper spray reduces the probability of you getting ripped off, but increases the chances of you getting badly hurt or killed.
The reverse applies in the wilderness.
YMMV.

well when used wisely i feel will protect you. when approached you do not automatically spray him in the face. the only time i see myself actually using it, is if i feel my life in in danger. even if sprayed, i dont see how that person could retaliate from it. burns your face, mouth, and nostrils, then cs gas gets into the respiratory system, and makes is very difficult to breathe, some people gag, and some throw up. one of my friends got sprayed with pepper sprayed with the police grade stuff for his explorer program he's in. according to him, it is very unlikely anyone could get back up from that. some of his buddies threw up too.

No doubt it sucks to be sprayed.
I'm saying you're more likely to be disarmed than to get a shot off.

well in my imagination i see myself seeing the person approaching and having it ready. i guess the criminals here arnt too smart and instead of surprising you, they walk up trying to be casual but constantly looking in all directions. thats when you get the spray out :)

It is good 15 dollar insurance, assuming that you keep it somewhere that can be accessed very quickly. I do bring mine along on many occasions, usually only night rides, and anytime I am carrying my messenger bag with camera/computer, because that would cost over 2k to replace. I also do carry it along when going to secluded places alone.

Practice was mentioned above, although it seems impossible to practice with, even the smaller sized cans of spray have 20+ squirts in them. Give it a try once, find a tree or something, aim at approximate face height, and just see how it works with one quick squirt.

Good luck and stay safe...
