Hey folks,

Just signed up here. Only 2 weeks into a new roadbike after about a 15-year hiatus. Have been a runner most of my life but injuries last year made me re-think cycling. Although Memphis has been rated poor for cycling I think it's really changing and the expansion of the Greenline rails to trails path here coming this fall encouraged me to start anew. The technology improvements in cycling seem huge to me (my previous bike was a Peugeot PX10) so I'm psyched about the potential for long rides once I've gotten back into cycling form.

Good to be here,
Steve

Hey Welcome!

I'm in Memphis too as a commuter. Germantown and Collierville are pretty nice for cyclists although I haven't been downtown or on the other side of kirby pkwy yet so I'm not sure how that would be on a bike. I moved here almost a year ago and started riding about 2 months ago. It's an adventure everyday for sure! Be safe and have fun!

Hey Ryan,

Thanks! I just put about an hour and 45 on the bike this morning. As I mentioned I'm mostly a fitness rider since I'm self-employed and work out of my home/studio so most of my commuting involves walking into my office from the bedroom <g>. I'm in midtown (cooper-young area) so I'm finding routes that are traffic-lite out to east memphis, trying to drag myself out very early in the morning to avoid both the traffic and the heat. I rode out to Humphrey's Blvd today, weaving through Chickasaw Gardens then hitting Shady Grove. It looks like once the greenline is open they'll be many more jump-off options out your way as well.

Cheers,

Steve

I take germantown rd to wolfriver/humphreys to kirby pkwy to shelby drive in the morning and then in the afternoon i skip germantown rd and take the backroads up to the wolfchase area. Awesome ride in the morning because its very quiet but in the afternoon there is a bit more traffic but its not too hard to manage. I hit up germantown greenway that goes along the wolf river.

One of these days I'm going to go for a weekend ride to overton park or downtown area.... One of these days as I have a 2yr old and another one thats due mid august.

Ryan, congratulation on your upcoming addition! Sounds like you might be looking at a bike trailer and/or tandems in future, haha.

I need to figure the east memphis roads out better, yesterday I hit Humphreys at Shady Grove and wasn't sure where to go from there. I'll be looking over some street maps online, but I will probably start to do some of these longer club rides on the weekends, although I'm not a fan of hot-weather cycling. It looks like this week we might get a break in the temps if the weatherman is right, I hope so.

Not yet, after so many years off the bike I wanted to get in some form of cycling shape before making anyone else suffer. I'm only starting my 3rd week of riding again and feel like I'm getting there. Looks like we are indeed going to get a break in the weather this week thank goodness, I'm signed up for the hightailers July 3rd ride this Saturday, I'm thinking of doing the 34 miler if this week's training goes well. Sinuses are giving me grief since yesterday. You do the Peddler rides?

And btw, welcome to fellow newbie Slow Hand as well!

What ride do you speak of? I can't seem to find info about it

It's at the Memphis Hightailers club site, called the Red White & Blue ride on July 3rd:

they have evening rides on tuesdays and thursdays. they also have (very) early saturday rides - the toxic tour.

they're perfect for noobs, and should help you get into enough shape to have your ass whooped on the breakfast club rides.
