I have a trek 5200 with a threaded fork and I am considering changing the fork to a threadless system. Anyone know if the headtube on a '96 5200 will accept a 1 1/8" threadless fork steerer and headset? Also, I have another frame which is designed to take a 1 1/8" threaded steerer - would I be able to take my fork and headset off the trek and install them on this frame?

You also need to make sure that there is a headset available for the headtube inside diameter.

You also need to make sure that there is a headset available for the headtube inside diameter.It's standard iso 1": 26.4 crown race and 30.2 cups. Why muddy the water unnecessarily? No Trek or other quality frame I know of built in the US would have used the pretty much obselete JIS standard.

Out of curiosity - why the switch? The cost of fork, headset, & stem is going to add up with little (or no) functional improvement.

There are also differences in the way forks ride if you choose right. All CF forks aren't the same.
