Fifty Plus (50+) - 3 more days and then its off the bike for 6 weeks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I posted a while back that I had joined the Big C club with prostate cancer. Well, I told my Dr. that I did not want to delay and I am about to get what I asked for. My surgery is this Friday morning at 0700. I am having the robotic prostatectomy and my Surgeon says he doesn't want me riding for 6 weeks. He said he doesn't want me to strain anything.
I have been riding a bit more than usual as I wanted to be in good condition before the surgery.
I have made a list of things to do while recovering. My bikes will get some maintenance that I have been putting off among other things. I am even thinking of having my Lemond powder coated while I am layed up. I have never really liked the color of it (its white:().
I will probably be posting more than I normally do, so I hope I don't bore you.
Stapfam, thanks for the advice on my conditioning, I have been doing the exercises you recommended. I found that I can do them on my bike.

I'm sure your fitness will serve you well with your recovery. All the best. BTW, my wife is an 18 year survivor of breast cancer.

A guy in our church had that robotic stuff done. He was up and around in a couple of days. Not riding a bike, mind you, but back to most normal activity after a very brief layoff.
Best of luck with the surgery and recovery.
Post pics of the newly painted bike. Will it be a custom color/style?

3 days after seed implants in my prostate drove 1,000 miles. 2 weeks after the surgery was riding.
Buns and scrotum were black and blue, but did minor saddle adjustment, and was good to go like nothing happened.
Doctor said: '. . . but you can't do that!'
That was 5 years ago!
Good luck!

Best wishes for the surgery and get well soon! I am going to recommend blue metallic with silver replacement decals for the LeMond. Candy red is very nice too. If you can't ride... working on bikes is okay eh? :thumb:

Best wishes for a successful surgery and a complication free recovery.
Oh yes, don't let your macho or anyone else make you start activity too soon. Some push it and it works. Most who push activity wish they hadn't.
Best wishes and a speedy recovery.
Looking forward to future ride reports.

I have been riding a bit more than usual as I wanted to be in good condition before the surgery.
That is a proven strategy. :)
Best wishes for a successful surgery, a speedy recovery and a triumphant return in 6 weeks. :thumb:
What color?
All the best to you for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery! Looking forward to pics of the refurbished bike and to hearing that you're back in the saddle come August. :thumb:

I hope the surgery goes well and you'll keep us informed as you heal.
I vote for red. It's a power color.

I hate to recommend this but get walking. It goes against the grain as I cannot walk far before the knees give me a problem. But After RP and a 12" deep incision- that was all I could do. You won't have that problem but if off the bike and "Strenuous" exercise out for a few weeks-- Keep your legs working. I used to walk a couple of miles a day. Initially just doing it was enough but not long before I was Putting the HRM on to get the HR up to working levels and keeping it there.
And sitting on the saddle after 6 weeks off will be painfull--Good Luck.

Second Stepfam's walking recommendation. Take it easy but get outdoors as soon as you feel like it. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

I had my robotic prostatectomy 4 weeks ago today and tonight was my first ride (17 miles). No pain at all. I do use a bike saddle with a substantial cutout in the taint area though.
At my two week post-op doctor visit my uro said I was all clear to resume cycling at four weeks so I did!
I am assuming you are in good shape (since you visit this forum) and that is a big advantage to a quick recovery!
You are still on the side of things where worry and the unknown are sometimes tough to deal with but soon you will be on the other side and on your way to a quick recovery.
Thank you all for the kind words and support. I am known to be kind of strong willed and usually well in charge of almost any situation, but I have to admit I am a bit apprehensive about the surgery. I am sure I will be fine once I wake up and start the recovery process.
Stapfam, my Dr. told me to walk and so I will. My wife loves to go for walks so I will have a walking partner.
As for the color of my bike, the fork starts out dark and goes through a few colors as it fades to white. I think I might go with a matching silver, or maybe grey with black logos. I will take some pictures and see if any of you have any suggestions :innocent:.
I had the Davinci on apr 20 and the Dr also said 6 weeks, which I stuck to. While I wasn't riding, I did a lot of walking and then began swimming (which I don't like much, but it is good for one's upper body and cardio). Surgery was okay, only complaint was a couple of days with nothing to eat and little to drink (highly recommend chewing gum). Was able to ride after 6 weeks without any change in bike or saddle. Was able to do 20-30 miles right away--though not as quickly as pre-op.
If you want some suggestions about dealing with the aftermath, send me a PM....let's spare the forum those details. I found the six weeks to go by very quickly and I did not get everything done with my bikes that I had planned. The 10 days post op with the cath take some adjusting, but that also passes quickly. Hope you have been doing your kegels, very important. Trust you surgeon has done lots of these. You'll be up walking either day of surg or next day. Wishing you the best for quick and speedy recovery.
Being active/walking as much as possible post-op will also help prevent DVT/PE blood clots - this is an underappreciated risk of surgery.
Good luck.

I REALLY HOPE that things went well and that prognosis is excellent.
My neighbour of 21 years was just diagnosed with the same situation as you.
I am going into the desert near Saudi tomorrow (not that far from Mekkah) and will be thinking of both you and my neighbour. The best to both of you. Remember WHO walks near you - whether you believe it or not ... I do - and God/Allah is the only ONE!! :-)

Today is the BIG DAY! Good luck with the recovery!
I am still amazed when my legs and hips are sore after a good walk, while a 60-mile bike ride produces no soreness. Different muscles, but it still amazes me. Walking is great exercise and will give your heart a workout while you aren't riding.
I wish you the best in your recovery and continued good health.
