Folding Bikes - right pedal falling apart twice on my downtube 9fs.

the first time it happened the whole pedal fell off in the grass, i was only able to recover the pedal and some of the tiny ball bearings. the nut that holds them together was gone, i couldnt find it. luckily I was still within the downtube warranty period so i got a replacement pedal from downtube.

the second time well, this is the new replacement peday i got, its coming loose again. i feel the pedal feeling a little grinding and very very loose, so i open the cover and see a nut there, tightened it but i couldn't, it must be shredded. i went to home depot but i can't find a nut that would match the tread. the tread seems fine, just the nut is bad. so i guess all the pedals falling apart, the nut maybe the culprit.

So my question is what is the nut size that hold the pedal together, i am trying to put my pedal back together.

Curious thing, it's always the right pedal, isn't it? I have a bin full of left pedals that are still okay after the failure of the right one from each pair.

But as to your pedal, you may be able to tighten it still. The nut you see is a locknut; take it all the way off. Next you'll see a washer with a tooth on the inside, which registers in a groove on the axle. Take that off, too. Now you see the cone, which is threaded onto the axle. You can turn this; that's the adjustment you want. Tighten it a little, but leave it a bit looser than you want. Now put the toothed washer back, and the locknut, and finally tighten the locknut down all the way. This will press the cone against the threads, and hopefully take up that last bit of looseness you left. If it's too tight now, or too loose, repeat the process until you get it right.

thanks for your reply, i did what you described but tread on the locknut is no good. it will not tighten up the pedal. do you know what size it is? so i can buy a replacement locknut instead of having to buy a new pedal.

why always the right pedal, maybe my right foot is made of pure lean muscle. the pedal just cant handle all that torque. my right foot eats folding pedals for breakfast lol.

Have you tried find a replacement nut at a smaller hardware store such as Ace, etc.? You may have better luck in a store that has a good selection of loose nuts & bolts. Also, did you try both metric and inch-based nuts on the pedal?

i did try the nut on the display thingy in homedepot where you can test fitment on a nut and nothing fit. i am going to head over to ACE tomorrow, i hope they have it. thanks.

I found the cone inside the current wellgo pedals on the Downtubes to disintegrate fairly quickly due to water entry. My right pedal on a new 8H only lasted about 200 miles, but there was salt spray from winter riding. The bearings / cone started grating and could not be adjusted. My current set is around 400 miles and seems OK so far.

i never ridden my bike in the rain. the left pedal had lasted over 500 miles and still good.

i just got back from ACE and they do have the correct size nut woo hoo. i did have to look for it. i didn't realize ACE had such a good stock of these nuts and bolts. i bought 4 just in case, but probably they will hold up much better than stock. they are twice the thickness of the stock nut. i just put my pedals back together and is ready to go. thanks :thumb:.
