Haven't done a great deal over the winter and that was when the snow came and Road riding was out for a while. Couple of weeks ago went out on the Tandem and really enjoyed it. There is a thrill about being on a bike and negotiating the trails. it takes a different type of skill and at times a lack of brain.

So tonight instead of doing my usual 20 miles on the road- I got the Bianchi out. Quick check on the bike and change wheels to get rid of the Mud Tyres and out for a hill or two--Well not really- only one hill and that was enough.

I took the "Easy" route up to the top of the South Downs and nearly had to walk. I do not walk up hills so to be this shattered after the easy 1 mile climb shocked me. Legs were quivering- lungs I think I left halfway up and the water bottle was empty. I mean it. One hill that is the last one on the 100 mile ride I used to do and I was finished. Only one thing for it and down to Friston and the quick way home----After a stop in a pub to replenish the liquid I had lost.

So Looks like I am going to have to get the MTB serviced this week and get into the Forest to get some energy and strength back for road riding. I always said Road riding was easier- it is.

No pics so relying on "Old" Photos from a few years ago to show you the easy route to the top of the Downs.

And the easy route is up a scree covered trail at an average of 12%

At least this way no one will accuse you of being a doper.

Hi Stapfam,

I was off-road a bit in the winter, even riding my mountain bike in the snow on some trails, and I think it did help me ride stronger once I hit the roads again. Also, I was riding at altitude (6,700 feet and above) so I think that worked well for me too.

Don't worry, the road bike strength will come back via the mountain bike!

157808157809You Brits have some better "offroad" trails than I would have thought. I really enjoy the pictures. My desert stuff is pretty boring.

Theory has it that off road riding will make you a stronger rider while road riding will boost your endurance. What little empirical data I have (I really don't do enough road riding to know this for certain) indicates that this may be close to the truth.

In addition to the physical issue, each type of riding will perfect a different skillset.

Not many trees where I rode on Tuesday but it does lead to Friston Forest.

This is on one of the cycle paths that have been cut out of the forest. I do mean cut out with a chain saw----Leaving the stumps of the trees 2" above the trail. Can lead to dirty clothing but not entry into Club Tombay as exiting pedals is not the problem.

But if you want roots and trees- This is Abbotts Wood. 2 miles from home- nothing more than a gentle slope and not in any way testing ot technical----Unless you try it in 20degF with a bit of snow but plenty of Ice. Could do with a bit of Ice right now to cool me down--May have to be in the Pint of Cider I am about to have.
