I am fairly new to the touring side. Most of my riding is road racing/club riding (5-6k a year). We recently purchased a small cabin up in the mountains with unlimited trail rides around so I purchased a Salsa Fargo after a wee bit of research. So, my question is, what shorts would you recommend for trail riding. I think I'll leave the road kit for the road and get something that is comfortable to walk a bit in and ride the trails. I would like a chamois. I hear that Mavic makes a nice pair of shorts (Red Rock, I think) but I would like to get your feedback.

Many Thanks,

Guy Gadois

PS: next up are questions about the rack set-up for the fargo...

For off-road riding, I wear my regular bib shorts and throw a pair of normal walking shorts over the top if I need additional insulation or protection. I've tried various MTB shorts and they all pretty much suck: underwear with a cheap chamois buttoned inside a cheap pair of baggy shorts? Not worth the money in my opinion...

Take a look at J&G Cyclewear touring shorts.
IMHO - a great multi purpose sport short - touring, hiking, swimming, canoe, getting ice cream etc.

The several pairs of MTB shorts I've tried generally are much less comfortable for long distance riding than my Pearl Izumi Ultrasensor roadie-weenie shorts.

I generally wear a a pair of nylon REI zip leg trousers (sans legs) over them, but it's nice to be able to leave them off in the event of really hot conditions. It's also nice to have the REI shorts to wear without the pad after the ride to let the bits air out somewhat.

For allmost all my rideing I wear light weight nylon hiking shorts over top regular cycling shorts.
I've been experimenting with just wearing athletic underwear and hiking shorts lately,so far I like that too.

You can also get a pair of padded briefs and wear whatever shorts suit your fancy. There are a few different makers of cycling padded briefs/boxerbriefs out there to choose from.

I've had good luck with triathlon shorts with a pair of regular shorts over them. Tri shorts have less chamois but I seem to have an iron bum so it works for me. I've never swapped a stock saddle and I swear you could cut a 2x4 in the shape of a seat and stick it on their and I would be fine, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
