Hybrid Bicycles - Bar ends, any one use them on their hybrid bikes?

I'm getting a 2009 Jamis Coda Comp which has Ritchey Comp 5D bend, 580mm flat handlebars and WTB Street Smart grips. I'm thinking that I will eventually add bar ends to help when out of the saddle and to change hand positions. Anyone use bar ends on their hybrids? If so why did you get them, how do they work for you and any suggestions on what kind I should use and how are they installed over the equipment I have? Thanks for your replies.

Bar ends are a necessity for me since my 2006 Sirrus LTD hybrid has no front suspension. Just having my hands flat on the bars all the time really beats up on my wrists. With the bar ends, I can side-grip the handlebars which seems to make going over rough surfaces easier on my wrists. Helps with hill climbs too coming off the saddle.
The bar ends simply clamp onto the ends of the straight handlebar. My bar ends are shorty carbon-fiber.

Does one just push the grips in farther or cut them to accommodate bar ends?

I had to do both on mine.. The stock grips that came with my bike covers up the ends of the handlebars. So I had to cut off the ends and push the grips in further by about half an inch (and move the shifter and brake lever clamps) to make room for the bar ends.
It was easy to do. Took me all of half an hour.

I use my bar-end all the time when standing up for climbing the steep hills.
I've got Ritchey pro long bar-ends like this:

They are very comfy and the bended shape at the end keeps your hands from sliding off.

AdelaaR, I can't seem to find those particular bar ends anywhere. Do you have a model number?
Also, what kind of aero bars are those? Profile Jammer GT?

I think they're called "pro medium", but it is indeed hard to find them apparently ;)

indeed. the giant rapid series (i have the 3) comes with short bar ends. i use them quite a bit as an alternate hand position. i'm thinking of picking up longer curved ones in future...

I'm thinking maybe the Ergon GC3 might be nice.
I have the Bontrager on my other hybrid and got the Ergon GC2 on my other. They are both perfect, allows other hand positions on the bar.

Same for this guy here---I, too, have the Rapid 3 and I use the bar ends for an alternative hand position.

Profile Designs has identical bar ends to those Ritchies: http://www.amazon.com/Profile-Design-Boxer-bar-ends/dp/B001KS3RFQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1277952000&sr=1-2
Heck, I bet both Ritchie and Profile source them from the same OEM and just put their own logos on it.
These guys have them too: http://www.amazon.com/Power-Tools-Bar-Ends-Black/dp/B000AGXKSS/ref=sr_1_93?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1277952212&sr=1-93

I have those my 7.5FX, the LBS threw them in for free. I am now thinking of switching to an Ergon GC3 or GR2, as I want to change the stock grips of the Trek.

I just had a set put on at the LBS. If you buy them there they install them free. Took the kid about 10 minutes.
I wanted some alternative hand positions too. Plus my lower back starts to ache and these alow me to occasionally sit up straight and stretch it a bit.

I'm pretty sure that wiggle.co.uk carries those. I was just looking at their bar ends yesterday.

Do you have picture of setup?
Currently, I have stock grips on FX 7.3, and Mirrycle Mirror. Want to modify setup to include bar ends & keep mirror. Thinking of going with the Ergon GP1's slightly moved in on the bar to allow for Bontrager Bar Ends which will allow me to keep mirror with configuration.
Any drawbacks to proposed configuration...are grips moved further inside uncomfortable or awkward feeling?

I didn't notice that much difference with the grips moved in. But I didn't use them that much anyway. I usually ride with my hands draped open over the trigger shifter covers.

That configuration will be fine - you probably won't even notice the difference - you will still like everything.

Here's my 2010 Sirrus Sport. I'm currently using the stock grips and bar ends, with my MIRRYCLE Mountain Mirror inserted in one of the ends. The mirror sticks out slightly because the mirror post is just a hair thick for the tapered inner diameter of the Sirrus handle bar, but it works just fine.
I'm heavily considering changing out the stock grips and bar ends for Ergon GP1's and Profile Design Boxer Mountain Bike Bar Ends.

I had some bar end grips on one of my hybrids, but they went unused about 99 percent of the time. I just could not get comfortable having one or both of my hands that far away from the brake lever, since the same percentage of time on the bike was working urban traffic.
TomChgo I hope these pics help. Sorry I didn't get to take pics of the Bontrager bar ends 158133158135158134

Just got some Specialized Overendz P2 (http://www.specialized.com/es/en/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=47424) bar ends. I see them as a very good addition to an hybrid bike due to the lack of multiple hand positions on flat handlebars.

Probably not what most think of when bar ends are mentioned but I have these drop bar ends. Not sure what to put on them right now, a rubber grip or bar tape.

Removed stock grips, replaced with Ergon GP-1's and bar ends. GP-1's allowed for both the mirror and bar ends. So far, new setup feels great!

I put bar tape on my mini drops (Origin 8 probably makes yours, too, as they look identical). Buttttt, make sure you get them situated first - I'd recommend running them bare for at least a month. Then wrap them up.

I started out using Ergon GC2s (http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/gc2):

I have since upgraded to trekking bars:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4012/4668413034_6300da239c.jpg
These offer a multitude of hand positions. I lost my mounting position for my mirror, so I had to switch to a helmet-mounted one. The bars are the best upgrade on my hybrid to date (although my Michelin Pilot City tires are a close second.) Admittedly the GC2s don't have a very big bar end (I believe the "2" signifies 2 fingers). That being said, they are very, very comfortable - so much so that they now reside on another bike of mine. the ergonomic grips on my trekking bars are cheap knock-offs; I plan to eventually replace them with Ergon GP1s.

Thanks for starting this one. I've been riding my Kona for 7 months now, and I need to move my hands around, so it's time for bar end grips.
I did find that the regular grips were fine for a while, but it seems that over time the tingling sets in sooner than it used to.
I also thinking of trimming the bars just a little, the bar on my Kona seems plenty wide in the normal hand position, that the ends will need to come in a bit.

While I do wear gloves when riding, my thought was that the bar ends may be more comfortable with bar tape added. I purchase most accessories from Performance bike store...any recommendation on the bar tape...and, wrapping technique (bottom of bar end to top, or vice versa; wrap clockwise vs counter clockwise; end wrap with electricians tape??) Will wrap loosen from grip over time, and frequency of having to re-wrap?
