Hi Everybody,

I'm new to SF, and was hoping to bike the 1 down to LA in late August. Any tips??

What kind of gear is essential (if I'm staying in hotels at night)?

Also, my bike is kind of old... 1975 Raleigh (aluminum).. but runs just fine. Would this be alright?

Thanks!

Don't skimp on the day-glo colors and blinky-lights. That road is popular in the summer and its striking scenery is also pretty distracting to RV drivers.

Although Highway 1 through Big Sur has a bad reputation for cyclists, it's not that dangerous. And it's spectacular, although at this time of year you could run into fog. Winds tend to blow - fiercely - north to south by late afternoon, which should help you out.

Be sure to take a mirror.

I recommend the Take A Look mirror.

Go to http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/pacificcoast.cfm and buy the maps. They are very good and have tons of good information. There are plenty of good places to stay along the way if you don't want to camp. We rode SF to SB on our Tandem last October. The weather was incredible and we motel camped along the way. The Big Sur section is fantastic but at this time of year you may wind up fogged in. Fall is better as there is less "marine layer". Here is a link to my blog of our ride. You may find some of the information useful. http://justaguyonlifesjourney.blogspot.com/
