Hybrid Bicycles - If you were to sell your hybrid

If you were going to sell your hybrid...how would you price it.. My cycling life is taking a different direction and Ive been debating selling mine. I've only had it for a year and got a sweet price on it as it was a 2007 model ..it was new though when I purchased it last June.

I'm going to presume they dont increase in value like a house in a good neighborhood but what would the depreciation rate be?

P.S. I'm still biking but I've decided I'm more a girl in skirt/dress/ kind of rider so I'm in the process of purchasing more appropriate bikes

Increasing in value ... definately not ... more like half the price or something like that.
The best thing for you to do is to search for some second-hand bikes that are almost identical to yours and see what prices they go for.

would it devalue that fast after barely a year? I have looked on the ads here but its hard to know what mine would be comparable too...Thanks for the answer though...time to research more I suppose

Yeah they decrease pretty fast. You said you got a deal on a older model. So it's now 3 years old despite you having had it only a year. You can always post it on Craigslist for whatever price you'd like and see if anyone bites. Reduce until it sells.
Half is usually a pretty good indicator though...unfortunately. Unless of course it's vintage and needs tons of work. Somehow those seem to sell for ridiculous amounts :)

Thanks for the answer...I may have to rethink selling it for now. or list and see what happens..I was thinking of starting it at 100$ less than what I paid. I'm going to take it to where I bought it first and have them go over it and make any annual maintenance it may need.

Why don't you check completed auctions on eBay? That will give you some idea...

There really isn't much point in bringing it in and paying for a tune-up if you're just going to sell it (unless it's free) As long as it's in working order, just post it on CL and see if you get any offers. Unlikely someone will pay extra b/c it was 'just tuned up'. There's nothing to lose by posting it. Worst case, no one shows interest.

Yeah "tuning up" doesn't sound like a good idea if you want to sell the bike.
Maybe if you told us what your bike is exactly we could help you determine a reasonable price.

Don’t pay for tune up. Get some lube and search you tube for how lube your bike. Take an old rag, q-tips and dust blower (kind you use to blow off dust on your computer keyboard) and clean the bike. Take nice pictures of the bike with good background. Post it best you can and see who nibbles. I will tell you, you will get some ridiculous offers mixed with few good offers.

If you bought the bike used you shouldn’t take that much of a loss. I bought and sold many used bikes and many I made profit from (never my intention).

I bought a 2009 Trek Soho for $899 last September, and sold it in March for $750 with rack and trunk bag. It took a while to sell, I had it up on CL for almost a month. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right buyer to come along that is your height, wants a hybrid, and has that amount of money to spend.

It's a 2007 Specialized Globe City 7.1 I got a deal on it but I bought it new as it had been away in the lbs's basement

I agree on the 1/2 new price. I think when you start getting within a hundred of a new one, most people will spend the extra to get one from the Bike Shop with a warrantee, some free service ect.

I was somewhat interested in an 09 Raleigh Cadent listed here locally. Guy has it listed for $550. I priced a brand new 2010 and it's $625. He's had it listed for a couple of months and still has it. I tried making an offer of $375 but he will only do $500. He insists it's like a new bike and worth every penny and offered to have it tuned up. Why would you spend money on a tune up instead of just lowering the price?? I think he will be keeping it for a while. The 2011 models will be out making it 3 years old.

You didn't tell us yet how much you paid for it, but I'm assuming that since you "got a deal on it", you paid about $450.
Maybe try to put it on CL for 375 or 350 ... if it is still in perfect condition that is.

Thanks...its in great condition as I baby it...just needs a light cleaning I'm in Canada too so the retail price would have been slightly higher...I think the LBS orginally had it at 650-ish ...I have the original price tag somewhere with the paperwork..

I think i have a a good price range to start at with what you all have suggested and many thanks:) I'm still debating whether to keep it or not

So I've been looking at old Schwin Varsity's in Craigslist because I'd like to have something with a step thru so I can wear a skirt without having to hike up my leg so high to clear the high bar.
I know getting an old bike isn't necessarily the best thing but it could be an intro into a road bike and it can be a bike that friends can borrow and I wouldn't be too concerned.
So if you keep your hybrid and use it for when you want it and get an extra bike on Craigslist with a step thru. I think thats what my plan of attack is.

That is a good idea...however I have a Pashley step through on layaway and a vintage Raleigh DL-1 I just bought too..LOL so I'll have two step through. The Pash will be good for winter riding and the dl-1 for summers. I may keep the riding for more utility biking though or when hubby wants to tackle the few hills we have here.

I pick up the Raleigh on the 9th and I cannot wait:) she is an old elegant beauty

Great Idea. but I would price it a little higher on craigslist, people will tend to pay more for same day
delivery, and can view it in person. Mostly just be patent, the right person will see and be praying you

I sold a 2010 Specialized Sirrus on Craigslist in Atlanta to purchase a Road Bike. I was asking $250.00 for a quick sale, I got $320.00 because the guy felt I was a Veteran and he would pay me more for my service LOL. Place high because people are going to try to low ball you any way.
