so should I make it a warm welcoming living space for friends and family to visit or just throw a mattress in a corner an make it my very own bike shop?

Are you sure you posted in the right forum? You might not get the reply you are looking for :D

Depends on the size I'd say. I have a 2/3 ratio. Two rooms for living and comfort, one room dedicated to cycling with tools, clothes, ... plus kitchen.

Hope this helps.

you don't really want to be sniffing all the fumes coming off the grease, lube and rubber... or do you?

AEO I think your priorities are misplaced.

op - what do you value most in life? Apartment should reflect that.

edit - I see the OP is an adult who might be looking to establish a relationship. The bike shop would tend to be an effective way to weed out female acquaintances who might have designs on changing him, however, it might serve to damage his "chances". Obviously, his call in the end.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

I hope he has a big apartment, multi story even. Driving your enemies before you in an efficiency is just asking for trouble. And don't get me started on the possible hearing damage that prolonged exposurue to lamentations in a confined space can bring about.

Bike shop. You need to find out if your potential soul mate knows one end of a wrench from the other. That way you no longer have to take the time to fix your own bike.
