So I just saw a request for more pics of my car on the mechanics forum and decided just to make a thread for it.

I got this car from a neighbor who bought it from a business man who got it from some russian who rebuilt it in the 90s who got it from the original business man in cali...

It just got a 3.4 from an 85 535i and 5 speed although since the previous owner of the engine decided to cut up the harness its been sitting, dual rate coilovers and willwoods are in the works.

Heres the view that seems to be tempting everyone

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh79/6erwebb/peugeot/004-1.jpg

In its prime, yes I know its low I couldnt stand it, the new coilovers will fix that.

Hopefully this will suffice ;)

Thanks for the love guys who already said nice things...:p

You do realize that this is - despite it being FOO - a Bicycle forum, right?

Your post was mostly gibberish.

If you look carefully, you can still see a bit of the old 3.0 CSL in there.

ROUkie, that poster is actually a painting that was done in my high school the same year the car was built.

Looks like a pretty strong family resemblance to me. Was the 6-series the successor to the CS models? My knowledge of Ye Olde BMWe Historye is weak in areas other than "I Covet A First Generation 2002."

Last week along my commute, someone left a barn door open. Inside was a very dusty 2002... If I had the time and the money...

You do the 02s are cheap, relatively. The 6 series was the little brother to the CS (coupe sport) hence the 635csi name (coupe sport injected, like fuel injection). The cs wasnt quite safe enough so they redesigned a new touring coupe with a b pillar. Apparently it made it plenty safe, Ive seen a few flipped and the roof never gave in so...

My car is so dusty it looks like it's been through Desert Storm.

I've been looking at the late model BMW's lately. The maint is so expensive on those things. My friend was telling me that he took his in for an oil change and the mechanic told him that the oil filter holder (WTH is that??) was cracked. To replace it would be $1,000. My friend said that since the car was not leaking, he is not going to replace it. But my question is, how does something like that (whatever it is - don't filters screw in?) break? And did the mechanic break it while changing the oil?

He's just about sick of the way they try to nickel and dime him for every service. And he's been good about keeping it maintained even though it costs him and arm and a leg. He's had no problem with his Mitsubishi Evo.

Boondocks? Heck the road is being worked on, then it gets narrow, then you enter Brentwood, then you come around the blind corner and there is a school bus stopped, then Paul McCartney will write a song about it. The carnage will be awful. The only good thing is that Linda McCartney will not be singing backing vocals and our eardrums might survive, if they are not destroyed by the fire ball resultant from a hotrod bimmer slamming into a school bus.

 you guys are great.

Siu, did he take it to a dealer? chances are a dealer would be honest about breaking it, other places.. not so much. The oil canister shouldnt be that much either and if its not leaking its probably just cracked.

The thing with BMW maintenance is more about who you take it to. I friend of mine is a retired bmw tech factory trained. He does some work for friends, those are the people to look for.

By the way, this thread promised 635 BMW pics... and there are only 4. Get to work!

I wanted a 318ti when they were out (always been a sucker for hatchbacks), but now that I'm not a teenager, it's passed.

depends on location. My sister tells me things are ugly in kansas city because there's only one dealer around. The oil filter housing is topside of the engine. Its quite nice, just unscrew a bolt and remove a cap, then you can replace the filter. Since its not an upside down screw-in filter, you can replace it without having to change the oil. I'm not sure how you'd crack that?

The BMW motorcycle dealers are the same way. One of the ones I bought stuff from gave me grief for wanting to install the $14 worth of sparkplugs I bought from them (that would be both of them), saying they were the ones that should be doing that. That's one of the reasons I'm an exBMW owner.

Is there a point to replacing the filter some other time than when you're changing the oil?
On my Camaro I just reach in, unscrew it, and screw a new one on. No tools, less than 2 minutes. I suppose I do get some dirt on my arm. If I was doing it some time other than when I change the oil I'd probably have to add a pint or so of oil to stay level.

The oil most BMW engines like is some weight of synthetic. If the oil is good after 3 or 5000 miles it may be unnecessary to change it although the filter probably should be changed. Also most bimmer oil filters are drop in canisters not screw on types.

If you're vehicle is not under a drivetrain warranty (where you may need to prove oil changes), you can wait until the service interval and send samples for analysis. This test is a fairly good indication of the health of the engine and how the recommended service intervals apply. It's not for everyone. I simply change my filter every time and the change interval is right at the mfg recommendation. I am using synthetics now, but I'm still not going to exceed the mileage recommendation.

I believe my VW filter is the same thing. But it is mounted on the bottom/front of the engine. The bonus is that it has an extra drain plug in the plastic cap. So you can empty the oil out of the canister before removing it.

I took the stereo out of my car and installed the oil filter in its place. That way it's close enough that I can change the filter at any time, such as in line at a drive-through, or hitting the apex on a narrow, twisty road in the mountains. You never know when that filter will give out.

exactly! and i find that if the fries are undercooked, a bit of the ol 30 weight helps

If they are, I am gonna marry him.Damn! They're not mine! ;)

Well, my brothers are the BMW fanatics. I've had my fill with reliability problems on BMWs (had an M1 back in the '80s and 3 self-destructing motors replaced on my E46 M3). I prefer to play with Porsche and Ferrari turbos nowadays. Anyone notice what model 6 is under the 3.0CS in that photo?

If I was to get a BMW today, I'd probably go with an 850ci. The styling had gotten really bland after Luthe left.

I about splooged when I saw the pic of the CSL and the 635 together. I was shopping for a daily driver not too long ago, and passed on a 635 csi and a 325ix (with a 5 speed). I would have loved to have either, for my third BMW. However, I needed something low maintenance and ready to drive, (which neither were), so I made the safe choice: My 89 Volvo 760 TI. It's still a sleeper, costs less to own, is as luxurious as most any Bimmers and Merc of that era, and doesn't attract unwanted attention from cops:

The Alpina B7 Turbo Coupé first came out in 1978. Based upon the 630csi and developed 300bhp. Got 155mph top-speed. After Porsche pulled the 930 Turbo in '79, they didn't have any factory models going that fast for another 7-years (stupid doctor in La Jolla killed himself and estate sued Porsche for producing a "monstrous uncontrollable car").
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/AutoTech/AlpinaB7_Turbo.jpg

Followed by the B7 S Turbo Coupé in 1982. Based upon the 635csi and got 330bhp with 162mph top-speed. :)
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/AutoTech/AlpinaB7S_Turbo.jpg

Then came the B7 Turbo Coupé /1 in 1984. Used the newer 635csi E24/1 model and 330bhp. Top-speed crept up to 166mph.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e346/DannoXYZ/AutoTech/AlpinaB7_Turbo_1_02.jpg

I love turbos!!! The B10 was a non-turbo model with only 261bhp. I think the BiTurbo models came later with the V8 powerplants.
