Hey I recently brought back this '99 Marin that my dad used to ride when I was on my old bike. She shifts rather rough...I've heard the RST is pretty far on the low end...and she has quite the extended stem.

I'm not planning on putting much money into the bike at this point, as I'd rather save for a new ride. I won't be able to purchase a new MTB till much later in the season at this point.

Here's what I want to fix for now...

The stem seems reallly long. I'm 6 ft. 1 in. and still feel like I'm being forced to stretch way out to grab the flat bars. This makes things seem really uncontrollable with the current setup. My dad is the one who set it up like this quite awhile back. Do you guys suggest I switch to a different stem? If so...which style? I'm not worried about sizing...as I'll measure before I purchase...just curious what a good move would be for all-purpose average trail riding????

My recent bike knowledge is in the road bike category...specifically the fixed deal. I converted an old bike into a road ride...turned out quite well. Now it's time for me to get my trail back goin.

yeah that does look small. I'd suggest a longer stem, but...damn that's a long stem.

took it out anyway with a few friends to try some local trails...bike did good...think i need more saddle time...plus maybe a new bike sooner or later to assist with the riding improvement.
