Bicycle Mechanics - Broken Suntour Mountech rear derailleur

Hello, all I have a 210 Miyata that I bought today for $100. Not sure whether it was a good deal or not as I am new to bicycling. While I was bicycling today I was riding up a little hill and tried to shift the rear gear my rear derailleur broke. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could order a new one online, or if their are better replacement derailleurs for this bike since I have heard these suntour mountechs are self-destruct able. ::: As a side note I was wondering if anyone also knows where I can get 27 1 1/4 wheels to replace the current wheels. They are in alright shape but I can see possible problems in the near future. ::: Thanks again! I would say check eBay for replacement derailer.

Considering they have not been made for over 20 years you got good lifespan out of it, Buy a new rear Mech.

rest of the drivetrain been used as well , an update is in order, [unless it has been ridden around the block then put in a time capsule..

You can still get 630/27" rims to rebuild your wheels , But if the brake-shoes adjust down just 4 mm you can adopt the more common 622/700c type.

Mountech, It was their engineers attempt to do something like Huret's Duopar.
on those, a second parallelogram moved up and down with the cog diameter,
and the main parallelogram moved in and out

yeah I checked ebay and there is only 1 on there that is the same suntour mt DR as mine, so there's a chance I'll lose the bid since ppl are bidding on it already. So any derailleur works for any bike? Or is their a specific model or type of DR I should be looking for.

How many teeth on your biggest rear cog?

Assuming it's 34 I'd get a Shimano Deore rear derailleur.

my friend and i both own miyata 610 touring bikes. they both came with Suntour Mountech rear derailleurs. they both broke from normal use. mountech rear derailleurs are notorious for breakage. we replaced with a suntour cyclone long cage and a shimano deore for the other. both were about 20.00 used.

I was working in a shop when the Mountech derailleurs came out. Every one we sold broke within a couple months.

+1 The Cyclone GT is an excellent choice, as are many other Suntour GT models. (GT means long cage).

AS far as wheels, options have been discussed many times. I would suggest you search the forums via google and you will get a lot of options and opinions to choose from.


Many of us get replacement wheels either used on C/L locally, or by buying a "donor" bike and reusing wheels. Most bikes are rarely ridden, so you can find some used parts (often cheap), that have a lot of life left in them.

+1 If your brake calipers can adjust down slightly, then 700c wheels an be a nice choice.

The Mountech is one of the reasons that Suntour went out of business.

PM me with your address and I'll send you the one I took off my Univega Gran Turisma. It was lightly used (like maybe 10 miles? The bike looked untouched when I got it), but I didn't want to have it fail unexpectedly, so I replaced it with a Deore LX.

Also check into Ebay for Suntour VGT Luxe (long cage). Longest gearing range of all the vintage Suntours and generally less expensive than the Cyclone series. Stay away from another Mountech. These were problematical!
