I sold my motorcycles last week and decided to move my bikes from in the house to the garage. It really brought it home when I saw all of mine and my wife's bikes lined up in one place, I could start a small shop. So my question is how many is too many and what's the number in your stable.

I am not a sentimental owner or collector and can't really use more than 3 bikes effectively. That said, I have 2 road bikes, 1 cross bike and one mtb. I generally buy one, sell one.

While I answered 4-5, I suppose that jumps to 8 if I add the wife and daughters.

I answered 1-3 - these are the bicycles I normally ride. However, I also have a vintage Peugeot hanging on a wall that I rarely ride, and a trainer in the basement that I never ride any more. Also, my wife has two and my son 1. So, all-in-all, I have 8 in the household.

I have two. A few years ago I had three, two road bikes and a commuter bike. The older, back-up road bike seemed to stay at home a lot so I sold it. Now I have a road bike and a CX bike --- but I've been eyeing another road bike.

My wife has her old diamond back hybrid, my youngest - her Fuji & her Raliegh (which needs to get sold), my older daughter has the Trek I found on the trash heap and I have my commuter, my climber and my cruiser.

I'm in the 6 - 10 camp if you count only complete bikes. I have 5, my wife has 2. There are some frames hanging around waiting to become complete bikes once again when I get around to it.

See my signature. The two Capos are currently down (#2 remains a project bike, and #1 has a broken rear axle), but the other three complement each other nicely: full ATB/mountain (Schwinn); transportation/beater/commuter (Peugeot); club/fun (Bianchi).

I have my Xtracycle, a Gitane mixte, a Univega mountain bike, a Raleigh mountain bike, a Mercier road bike, and a Schwinn mountain bike. Strangely enough the X gets all the bike bling and most of the miles.

I have more than one because each has a purpose or a history with me. My Pinarello Trevisio steel road bike, great for Sunday outings and the occasional pretend criterium, my Guercittio SLX steel road bike, good for spanking modern cf bikes, fast and capable over the road, my old Centurion Ironman, rigged for long distances at speed, Centurion Prestige, a knife fighter in mild mannered disguise, my Surly Cross Check because I live down a dirt road and need an all purpose, multi-surface and do anything machine, my Specialized Stumpjumper because a Pinarello does not do well on mountain single track. One bike, no way.

I have 4 with one 73 Raleigh Supercourse unassembled, boxed and ready for shipping. Just sent away my Dahon folder to my brother last week. I hope he enjoys it. The Marin and Trek are my active bikes right now with one being a back up ride.

I have twelve and have decided to sell two. I like each bike to add something different (MTB, cross, SS, TT, etc.) My work room in the basement has permanent hanging space for 9, floor space for 4, and two work stands. I have some temporary joist hangers that can hold several more. I have a bike of the week poster at work that's up to 140. Each week it shows a different bike I've built or refurbished and kept or sold to support my hobby.
I was headed out to work last week when I noticed my rear wheel was flat. It was a simple matter to swap out to another bike for the commute.

Four road bikes. Two are vintage two are modern. three are used 100 miles/month or more. I'll ride 400 to 600 miles/month.

I'm the original owner of this 1973 Paramount;

This is my Rain bike: A 1978 Trek 400d Elance, this bike has a modern 20 speed Ultegra drivetrain, the wheels are Open Pro rims on Dura Ace hubs;

My Soma Double Cross Has a 30 speed road triple drivetrain, It's good for longer hilly rides and is very comfortable on a long day

My Lynskey built Titanium road bike is also good for 200k;

Felt F75, but I'm not crazy about the 50/34 crank. :notamused: My other road bike has a 53/39 and it works just fine on the hills around here.

Two, one hard tail and one tandem. I have found riding two bikes at the same time a bit challenging truthfully...

I have 3 bikes that get a lot of miles:

- Davidson, for long rides in all kinds of weather
- Tommasini, just modernized, for shorter rides, dry days only
- Boedie, commuting, rain storms, light touring

Bike number 4 is a project bike that I'm not riding much, will either get finished or sold later this year,

- 1988 steel Specialized Stumpjumper, converted to a bad-weather commuter bike; I don't use it very much, cause the Boedie up above will plow through anything on paved roads. I am thinking about converting it into a dirt-road drop-bar bike, selling it, or turning it back into a mountain bike.

I answer "4" bikes in the poll, but my garage also houses two of my son's bikes:

- Trek mountain bike
- vintage Panasonic touring bike

Then there is the hill bike

Then there is the rain bike.

Then there are the others That get regular use.

I have 1 inexpensive hybrid, 1 folder, and 1 full supsension mountain bike. The folder is my everyday transportation/utility bike and gets ridden most. My live-in boyfriend also has a mountain bike, which he uses for all-purpose riding.

I'm trying to keep the stable at 7, since that's all the practical room I have for fully assembled bicycles (2 more unassembled bikes are stored away). Of that 7, only two of them are currently used as dedicated commuters, the rest are retired commuters that now serve as family outing bikes.

Two RANS recumbents that I ride (one short wheelbase and one long wheelbase), one Novara hybrid that my 22-yr-old son has started to ride (this bike has been neglected since I took up with recumbents), and one KHS tandem that I ride with my wife/stoker.

Just 2. A giant transport DX named Belle that I love and commute on and do long (50 miles or there abouts) rides on, and a Specialized Myka FSR Comp that I ride on the rare times when I ride single track stuff. My husband doesn't like off road riding, so we don't do it as often as I would like.

Counting your wife's bikes and your kid's bikes is cheating.

There's no such thing as too many bikes. I have six. Four of them get ridden fairly often.
'92 Bridgestone RB-1 - fast road bike, mostly under 50 mile rides
'09 Salsa Casseroll - long distance bike, doubling as occasional commuter
'08 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp - full suspension MTB, singletrack and rough trails
'92 Trek 970 - rigid MTB, some offroad trails, MUPs, tooling around town
'05 KHS Tandemania Milano - tandem road bike, not ridden much lately, hope to change that soon
'74 Peugeot UO 18 - mixte flat bar road bike, rarely ridden, may sell

I think I am going to make a sign of your quote "God, country, and N+1" and hang it in my garage. Only 15 right now. +3 unbuilt frames + wife's comfort bike + 2 kids bikes(grandkids) so I guess the official census would be 21.

I have seven at the moment:

1. GT Titanium Edge / SRAM Force; gets the most miles (2 double cneturies this year, Davis and Eastern Sierra)
2. Calfee Tetra Pro / Ultegra Triple gets the next most miles (2 double centuries this year, Hemet and Grand Tour).
3. MASI Gran Criterium made into a fixed gear (42 x 15) gets the next most miles (three centuries, no doubles!).
4. Mercian Vincitore Randoneer (sp?) and touring bike, used to get ridden a lot, now not much.
5. GT 853 / Ultegra with aero bars, not ridden much but I like it too much to sell it.
6. Hercules 3-spd, British with upgrades, mostly used to ride to the grocery and back.
7. DaHon Speed 8 Folding Bike, gets used occasionally but not as much as I thought it would when I bought it.

I am really glad to see how many people have as many bikes as I do if not more. I was beginning to think I was getting a little carried away but am actually not too bad, yet. I will admit I have a bad case of MBS (multiple bike syndrome) but in my defense each bike I own has a specific purpose. One of the learnings from my motorcycle ownership was I am not happy with a bicycle or motorcycle that is good at a lot of things but not great at any, for me I want to have the right tool for the task at hand. Now all I need to round out the collection is a utility bike like the Surly Big Dummy or Kona UTE.

This is a difficult question to answer accurately….
These are my keepers, as of today:
• 4 tandems; a huffy coaster brake, Schwinn Twin 5 spd, Burley Samba, EZ Tandem
• A Shwinn Town & Country trike
• A 1962 Schwinn Starlet III
• A Ross 5 spd with shimano FWC
• 3 Alenax (2 mens, 1 womens)
• Three mens road bikes (2 1991 Schwinn 357’s, one 1987 Raleigh Marathon)
• Two womens road bikes (one 1976 Schwinn Varsity-the wifes, one Raleigh)
• One 2007 EZ Sport
• One 2005 Volae Tour
• One 2000 Easy Racer Tour Easy
• One 2009 Sun SX-1 (wifes)
• One womans mtn. bike, Schwinn (wifes)
• One mens mtn bike 1988 Trek 820
• One Schwinn Traveler, kick-back two spd.
• One mens 2001 Raleigh C-40
• One Trek 24’ unicycle (half a bike)

I also have seven of my daughters’ bikes stashed about the garage and house until they have a places of their own to store them in.

There are five beater bikes kicking about that are awaiting my attention. I don’t know what will become of them…I may restore and keep, I may restore and donate, or I may cannibalize them.

So, if I haven’t forgotten any, that amounts to
23.5 keepers between my bride and myself
7 being temporarily held for the kids
5 with uncertain futures

I didn’t count the Kickbike

35.5 bikes total!

I paid for them all. I maintain(ed) them all. I count them all!

That’s fewer than I thought there were….go figure!! :o
