Yep, I climbed Mt. Diablo in 1974 or 75 for the first time, in blue jean shorts, a cotton tee, tennis shoes, sexy socks on a Gitaine Grand Sport Deluxe that was too big for me and weighed a ton. Steel rims, baby! It was great.

Do you still have your Gitane? My first road bike was also a Gitane, still have it. Although it's needs a lot of work, especially the rusty components. Mine came with fenders and lights that I later removed. I rode it to school (middle and high) every day. No Mt. Diablo like features where I used to live.

That's awesome. Thankfully (or is that sadly) I was alive when you did that, but wouldn't have had the motor skills to get my buggy up there.

Toddman007: YES, I bought that bile at a bike shop on Mt. Diablo Bl in Walnut Creek just after I got out of high school in 1971. Carbon steel and steel rims. Yikes! But I rode it lots for a few years then got a used Gitaine Tour de France that I still have (converted to a fixed/SS.) I no longer have the socks.

DiabloScott: My cycling mentor Matt Gass took the photo with my camera. No picnic supplies, I was a cyclist, darn it. Just one with no money for shoes or shorts. I think I'm wearing my old high school PE shirt.

Mafac brakes that squealed and didn't stop well. I can't remember the spelling, but it had a French drive train called "Huret" or something. I upgraded to Suntour then it actually shifted.
