Very cool cars, and not as expensive as people think...

And on another note, I just got the 3 BTTF movies and our family watched them all for the first time. My kids loved them! Just as funny as I remembered them.

That is because in spite of their stainless steel bodywork and great lines, they have a craptastic French engine underneath, correct?

Joint venture between Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo. Two-thirds French.

And yeah, that engine stunk up the DMC-12. Ultra-futuristic stainless body, gullwing doors, Lotus-designed suspension... It was so close.

As a student of metallurgy (who ended up in IT by accident), I love the stainless body.

I remembered that it was a 3.8L V6, and that it was a Renault... but not the joint-venture part.

Re-watched the first movie last night by coincidence. Still great movies.

There's a Delorean in the Bay area somewhere with an "OUTTIME" license plate.

Saw a powder pink one on Geary St, SF. It was kind of cool painted like that.

Correct on almost all counts, the original PRV engine was garbage... several guys have converted them to carburetors to improve reliability. Original engine was a 2.8, not a 3.8.

Best ones I've seen are the ones who do engine swaps on them. I saw one with a turbo Buick V6 in it... that thing was fast. Regardless of it not being able to get out of it's own way, they're still a blast to drive, and you get stopped pretty much constantly by people asking about it.

I like to learn something every day, especially since I must have missed metallurgy class: why can't you pound out the dents on a stainless steel body panel?

Here in Houston you have a better chance of seeing one. Thanks to the shop, actually in Humble, that builds/rebuilds them. I see them on trailers from time to time either going to or coming from.

Several months ago, the WSJ did an article on the DeLorean. There is one company that pretty much bought up all the manufactured parts after the manufacturing company went broke. They can and have built new cars from scratch using the previously-manufactured parts, and also do rebuild work. I recall one of the photos showing rack after rack of body panels ready to go.

A local guy on our car forums has one. The SS body is just a skin, extremely thin. And nobody can touch it at car meets, because he said last time he let people touch, apparently it took him hours to get the fingerprints off, something about the oils reacting with the SS. He replaced the engine with a turbo-charged V6, not sure what brand. Lowered it as well. Much improvement over the factory car.

Tell him to go to Lowes/Home Depot to buy some stainless steel cleaner (it can be found by the appliances) to clean stainless refrig./dishwasher doors. Most conventional cleaning products won't get rid of those fingerprints.

I was going to give a lovely treatise on how some stainless steels derive their strength from being pounded into shape in the first place instead of the more usual heat-treating methods, meaning that a collision and subsequent re-re-shaping would decrease the strength and increase the brittleness of the panel. But I don't know which alloy was used in the DeLorean, so the aesthetic/work-hardening answer above is a good one, too.

The problem is the surface has a brushed finish and even if you can pound it back out to the proper shape, the surface will show the hammer marks. Trying to buff it with a wire-wheel was futile since it didn't match the original finish either. So in the end, they painted it.

^^^ I would have thought that you could redo the brushed finish with a green Scotchbrite pad, like I can do on my brushed titanium hardtail.
