If you'd be interested in seeing an 80-mile bike route through wilderness in the Adirondacks, check out this post (http://blog.timesunion.com/adirondacks/a-wild-ride-for-cyclists/220/).

"the other train, which runs between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake"

Ha! I rode from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake last month during my ADK loop! I camped at the Meadowbrook State Park in Ray Brook and I saw a hardly used railway running right past the campground. That was the one, I believe. That would be awesome, such a pretty area and that campground is right there. Traffic-free through wilderness, wow! Maybe that could be a start of something bigger/longer to Tupper Lake? I also noticed lots of cyclists in Lake Placid.

Is there an official petition going or something? That would fit nicely in the ADK loop route :)

Yes, that's the one. Theoretically, the bike path could run all the way from Placid to Old Forge, about 80 miles. The town of North Elba, which includes Lake Placid, is hiring a consultant to compare the economic benefits of the train vs. a local bike path. The state DOT owns the rail corridor. When it next develops a management plan for the corridor, cyclists could push for the long-distance bike path. That's a few years off. No petition drive at the moment.

ps: what was your ADK loop and how many miles?
