I have never seen automatic parking, but i've literally had dreams about it. Or more like nightmares.

The water table is 12 feet below my city's downtown; I guess we won't be getting a basement-level automatic wheelchair parker. Seriously, this sort of thing is truly sad. If we invested the same money in creating safe bike roads there would be no need to store these mobile toxic-waste dumping devices all over our public spaces.

Bet the system crashes about 5 times a month and no one can find their car.

My mistake. It's multi-story parking structures that started in the 20's. The first automated one was in Cincinatti in 1932 (http://www.robopark.com/product.html).

They have to have those in Japan because you are not allowed to park a bike anywhere. Okay, I exaggerate here. However, they are none too tolerant of random bike parking (yet).

It would be light years ahead if we could just get people to leave our bikes alone when we park them now.

I personally like the 'bike tree'; a small re-design to the assembly holding the front wheel would accomodate a U-lock, aided and abetted by a cable through the frame.

a buddy of mine is a contractor, and a fellow bike-a-holic
he has out grown his bike room at his house
my suggestion was a tie-rack-esq, rotunda, which revolves, placed about 3/4 inside a wall
with curved double doors, cabinet-esq, complete with storage inside the doors

open the doors to reveal a turn style of bikes
the bikes stored with the wheels to the center, hanging from a rack
in a pie shape fashion

on the in between
of course...
your bike kits to match the bikes

simply open the doors
spin the bike turn table to your choice for the day...
