I got a free Y-33 frame in excellent condition not long ago and threw it together with what I had lying around with the intention to sell it. Now I want to keep the bike, but of course I'm used to higher end stuff so would want to upgrade it.

Keeping in mind that the frame is in great condition, is it worth it? I can't afford a full suspension bike (really like my hardtail with XT, but this would be fun) so this is the way to do it if at all.

Idea:

Fork - Tora or equal
Drivetrain - 9 speed deore

That's all that I'd want on it, but have mixed responses about the frame. Thanks

The Y-33 originally came with a Rockshox Judy SL. Find one of those.

The Judy as a crap fork. I've heard almost nothing good about it. I hear the steerer tube almost always cracks after only a few months, if that. You'd be better of with a Tora if you can find one with the recommended travel for the frame.

Until the sid came around the Judy was rockshox top of the line fork. After the sid it became entry level.

Sweet, I always did like the Trek Y-bikes, cool design. Best look for a fork that has the same travel as the stock one, most likely 80mm or possibly 100mm so you don't funk up the geometry. You also might want to think about replacing the shock on that decade old bike to balance out the suspension considering you're going with a new fork. Try Cane Creek and their Cloud Nine shock. They can build it to the same specs as the stock shock and you can get it for $100 off on their upgrade program. Fork, shock and drivetrain upgrade will still be far cheaper than forking out the cash for a new full suspension bike.
