Northern California - Quick south bay bike shop recommendation?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just moved to the bay area not too long along (mountain view area) and I have my bike with me. I'm looking to give my bike a tune up so I'm looking for a bike shop that will give me a good, honest service as well as a place to buy spare parts (currently looking for a shifter cable...).

Any recommendations? Thanks :)

I've had good luck at Chain Reaction and Bicycle Outfitter, both just off Foothill Expressway in Los Altos. No experience with shops in MV.

I live in Mountain View, but head to Calmar Bicycles for any serious work and they've always treated me well. Cognition Cyclery off Castro in downtown MV is new; you should give them a try and keep a near-to-MV shop open.

Cupertino Bike in Cupertino is a very good shop.
Chain Reaction is another one although I have only gone to the Redwood City store.

I've had excellent service from Bike Connection in Palo Alto (El Camino/Stanford intersection). On the web at http://bikeconnection.net

The store manager Mike is very competent, knowledgeable, and easy to work with.

They deal with Giant, Scott, Felt, etc., and I'm sure they would be able to handle your tune up. Their head service person is Bob, also very competent and easy to work with.

lately Performance Bike (near the intersection of El Camino Real and Rengstorff Ave) has gotten better about their customer service (meaning you can get someone to help you in under 30 minutes), although I'd never have them work on any bike of mine. IF you just need to pick something up, good place to do so, as they are open until 9pm every day except Sunday. Comes in handy when you realize you need something before the ride next day and every other shop is closed :)

For actual advice or bike servicing, I head to Chain Reaction in Los Altos. A bit pricier than some shops, but I've found them to be very helpful and they always do good work on my bike. I've worked to cultivate a relationship with them, and as a result, I get minor services on the house. Hopefully with more time, I'll get more benefits :)
I tried the service side of Bicycle Outfitter because my headset was acting funny, and I got poor service. The retail side is great, though.

I've actually gotten good service at Bicycle Outfitter in Los Altos, so it may depend on the day or who you work with. I've also had good experiences with Chain Reaction in L.A.

When I lived in Mountain View I always took my bikes to Passion Trail Bikes in Belmont for service. Superb customer service, friendly staff and awesome shop. For spare parts I went to the Performance Bike on El Camino.
