i'm thinking of buying a trek hybrid with wider tires. once i know rim width then i'll use sheldon's chart for the conservatively widest tire that i can use.

Just remember that guide is a "guide".

Many tires are now offered that don't fit in those categories.

Case in point - my Crosstrail came with 45mm wide tires on an 18mm wide (internal width) rim.

According to that chart, it shouldn't fit - but they were fine.

thank you wanderer for your always helpful, reliable advice. i really appreciate it. that's a good point. sheldon brown mentioned in his article that bicycle companies these days put very wide tires on narrow rims to save weight. to this i agree with grant peterson...a frame should weigh what it ought to weigh. i called up trek and they suggested a 35 mm is how wide we should go. right now i'm checking out a mountain bike since i already have a hybrid.

thanks again!
