Foo - any knife afficianados in foo-land?

well foosters, my trusty pocket companion is gone, lost to the deep blue sea.

i've been a mariner essentially my whole life. constantly on and around boats of all kinds, and my spyderco has been a great companion over the years. reliable, tough, just a great knife.

i recently purchased a jet ski, and in an anchor tangling, nautical near disaster, she went overboard, just as i freed myself from a potential nightmare.

i've always liked knives, and truth is, i have plenty of replacements, but this was my "go to" knife, and has been around the world with me.

can anyone recommend a highly corrosion resistant, one hand opening, relatively compact folder??

is spyderco the best there is? price is irrelevant, i hope to have my next knife forever.

If you don't mind paying $400ish, CR Sebenzas seem to be a top seller. I like Lone Wolf T2s, myself.

Spyderco is a good brand. Kershaw, Cold Steel, AlMar, Benchmade, SOG, CRKT are also good brands. Buck and Gerber have some good models but they are typically more inexpensive mass market knives.

The trend these days is towards high tech steels, steels that are harder and would hold an edge longer. But this makes them typically less chip and break resistant and less corrosion resistant. If you want a knife to really be corrosion resistant then you probably want a stainless steel that would be considered more mundane, maybe one of the 440 variations.

I have a variety of small folding knives that I've collected and tried as knives to carry every day. Right now I'm carrying a Benchmade Griptilian. I have come to like the one-hand operation of knives with thumb studs and liner locks or similar, and I like knives with pocket clips. In Texas we don't have that many restrictions on the type of knife that I can carry every day, but your location may be difficult. When I travel to other states I frequently carry a Leatherman multitool because it is considered more "tool" than weapon.

I also have a small collection of custom handmade hunting knives that I've bought to enjoy as works of art. I've been interested in knifemaking but I don't have the shop equipment to allow me to completely make knives. I have bought a few pre-shaped blades and assembled and finished them with my own handle materials. The most recent one I made was made as a father's day gift for my father:

Spyderco's Salt series of knives are made with H1 steel which is about as rust proof as you can get. Available in all sorts of shapes from sheepsfoot to hawkbill shapes, serrated or non-serrated edges, black or yellow handles, and coated or uncoated blades. Take your pick, then buy two. ;) I have a Spyderco Salt I which was great until I sacrificed it to open a tin can at the beach because someone forgot to bring a can opener... The good thing is that it sliced open the top of the can with no problem. The bad thing is that i've been too lazy to buy a sharpener and fix it up.

I'm a Spyderco junkie and I have way more than I really need (but they're just so dang cool that I keep buying them). I look at knives from other companies on occasion, but I keep coming back to Spyderco.

I'd like to have a Lum one of these days. Not sure if his wife has any more designs in his workshop she's going to release.

Steel will probably be the same CPMS30V. Hopefully they'll have variations on the handle like they did with the Military model (titanium, carbon fiber, orange, digi-camo, etc.)

The Lum knives are definitely sweet. I actually have 2 of the Lum Chinese folders, one black coated and the other uncoated. I bought one and liked it so much I had to buy a second one so I could carry it regularly and still have one safely stored away. :lol: (I'm actually thinking of picking up 1 or 2 more just 'cuz)

Unless it's DLC I don't like the coating.

here's another question for the knife gurus:

i've always sharpened my own knives with a wet stone that i've had for decades. one of my many "summer" jobs when i was a kid was working on a fishing boat, filleting fish on the spot, man, i had some sharp knives back then.

these knives with the serrations, or partial serrations - how do you sharpen these?

Look for a triangle shaped diamond honer. Take your time, and you can get a great edge on a serrated blade.

I really like Spyderco knives. They built quality products that are cost-effective, of not actually cheap in price.

As for losing a treasured knife, I have been there. My Spyderco Mariner, which was either the first or second Spyderco I bought, back in the 1980's. disappeared on a kayaking trip in the Trinity River delta in the early 1990's.

I bought the blade already ground and polished. I think it is probably pretty basic stuff. The scales are stabilized spalted maple burl, with a couple of brass pins. It is a pretty nice looking knife as long as you don't look at it real close, the workmanship is not up to the standards of the good custom knifemakers.
