Has anyone heard of SNG (I believe stands for "Stop N Go") brakes? I am looking for a long-reach nutted-bolt selt of calipers but don't want to order internationally from VeloOrange for the R556's retailing @ $72USD (I am living in Toronto, Canada). I've been informed that a local shop sells a pair of calipers by this company that incorporate a nutted bolt, are dual-pivot and have a 57-75mm reach, retailing for $30. I am assuming that they are of cheaper quality then the tektro R556 but could save me time and money as opposed to ordering from VO. Anyone heard of these or of the company that makes them?

Not usually one to settle for cheap parts, especially not for the project I am currently working on, which is primarily putting newer components on a classy vintage Italian frame. Just that I am a little short on cash at the moment and ordering internationally is such a pain!

ps. I just tried googling the company and could not find anything... very odd. Only thing I found was it being mentioned in a few posts on this site. The fact that I could not find a company website/profile is a tad suspicious!

Your best bet is to visit the local shop and take a look at the brake they offer. Also while there make a judgment call about the shop. If it looks decent, and the shop seems knowledgeable go for it.

Do you really need that much reach? Older high quality frames normally use what used to be called standard reach (and are now called long reach) with a reach of typically 47 to 57 mm while current short reach brakes typically adjust from 37 -47 mm. Those extra long reach calipers you mention may be too long.

I've used sNG levers, but didn't like them. Never used their calipers.

just go to urbane cyclist, they should have R556.

Well I've measured from the centre of the bolt to the rim and its about 58mm-60mm, it's a frame from the late 60's early 70's (Garlatti). The shop I speak of is Urbane, but the R556's they sell are recessed allen nut versions, whereas I need the classic nutted long-bolt version. I guess I may just have to suck it up and order the $72 Tektro's from VO if the SNG calipers are super cheapo. The frame I am building on is too nice to put really cheap parts on. If the SNG's weren't terrible I might have just gone with those to save the hassle of long/expensive shipping from international sites. Thanks guys and if anyone has further advice please fill me in!
